Lincoln vs. Davis

A review of Brian R. Dirck, Lincoln and Davis: Imagining America, 1809-1865 (Lawrence, KS: University of Kansas Press, 2001).

Mr. Dirck’s comparative analysis of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis promises much.  Friendly reviewers have found his work “intellectual history at its most stimulating,” or “psychologically sophisticated.”  Alas, I confess that I do not see it.  To be fair to Mr. Dirck, he is constrained by the usual orthodoxies and dogmas which currently reign in the academy.  Moreover, Mr. Dirck does attempt a fair analysis of both men, and he does give us useful parts of both Davis and Lincoln, moreso Davis, but we do not quite get the whole man in either case.  In Lincoln’s case, Mr. Dirck’s analysis leaves out the essence of the man’s self-conception.

Much of Mr. Dirck’s narrative plunges into the depths of psycho history.  Psychology is a slippery enough endeavor when one has the patient live and in person, and on the couch.  When the subjects are dead and the source record is incomplete, then one treads where angels fear to go.  For example, let us examine Mr. Dirck’s case for the presence of surrogate fathers in the life of both Mr. Davis and Mr. Lincoln.  Joseph Davis, the elder brother of Jefferson Davis, does present a plausible figure for surrogate father.  He takes an active interest in Jefferson Davis’s education, his professional career as a soldier, and later as a planter and politician, and in the formation of  Jefferson Davis’s character and intellect.  The case for Henry Clay and George Washington representing surrogate fathers for Lincoln is a bridge too far.  Granted, the idea fits neatly with Mr. Dirck’s Lincoln as the abstract and detached logician.  Nevertheless, describing Mr. Lincoln’s reaction to Stephen Douglas’s charge that Lincoln had betrayed the principles of Henry Clay as that of an indignant “natural descendant.” is a stretch.

Could not a more simple explanation be that Lincoln was merely stung by Mr. Douglas’s veiled charge of hypocrisy for Lincoln’s rejection of the Compromise of 1850?  A compromise that was, as Mr. Douglas pointed out, designed by one Henry Clay.  As they say in psychology, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Spain's government seeks rebellion and sedition charges against Catalonia's leaders

Catalonia’s ousted president has traveled to Brussels and been offered asylum, Spanish authorities said Monday soon after indicating that prosecutors were filing charges against him and other regional leaders related to their declaration of independence last week.

Spanish prosecutors in Madrid said they were asking judges for rebellion, sedition and embezzlement charges against Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and others who were dismissed by Spain’s central government.

Puigdemont and a majority of Catalonia’s parliament declared independence Friday, but the Spanish government then fired them under a special constitutional provision and called new regional elections Dec. 21.

The attorney general, José Manuel Maza, did not order their immediate arrest, saying he wanted to urgently prosecute the 20 politicians and ordering them to appear in court in Madrid in coming days.

Time has already run out on conservatives. They had 37 years, the Presidency, the House, the Senate, nine Supreme Court nominations, and two economic booms with which to fight the cultural war. And they did absolutely nothing... The Alt-Right acts. The Alt-Right fights. The Alt-Right does not surrender. Because of that, the Alt-Right will be the only Right that survives to defeat the Left.

John Kelly: Robert E. Lee an honorable man & 'lack of an ability to compromise' led to Civil War

White House chief of staff John Kelly is coming under fire for comments made about the Civil War during an interview that aired Monday night, and some on the Left are accusing the retired Marine Corps general of being racist after he said the Civil War was caused by the “lack of an ability to compromise.”

Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked Kelly about efforts to take down Confederate monuments, and said there is a “lack of appreciation of history” today.

“I would tell you that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man. He was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state, which 150 years ago was more important than country. It was always loyalty to state first back in those days. Now it’s different today,” Kelly said. “But the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War, and men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand.”

Revisiting “Climate Change”

Via David

Image758_shadow.png-1-1024x777

I wrote in Climate Change: Why I no longer believe… that I had investigated and changed my mind on CO2 being a global crisis.  Let me repeat that – I started out believing it was a crisis, dug into the background and details, read materials unapproved of by those “in charge”, and changed my mind.  Part of that change included reading materials disapproved-of by many in my social circles.  (Aside: back in my college years people – including me – were proud to declare I read banned books!

Today, many of those same people now want to ban books – and websites and magazines.)  To any who would immediately dismiss me, I would counter with a simple question: When presented with broader, more in-depth evidence that – over time – paints a picture contradicting what you “know” is true, what do you do?  Which type of person are you?

Wall Street Journal dismisses George Papadopoulos indictment: 'No evidence' he got resources from Russia

The Wall Street Journal editorial board dismissed Monday's indictments against former members of Trump's campaign, and said there is still no evidence that the campaign ever received anything of value from Russia.

On Monday, former Trump campaign official Paul Manafort was indicted for tax evasion and failure to register as an agent of a pro-Russia group in Ukraine. It was also revealed that Trump's former foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, was cooperating with law enforcement after first lying to the FBI about past communications he had attempting to set up meetings between the campaign and Russia.

Former Federal Prosecutor: Manafort Indictment Not Much There, and a Boon for Trump

 http://c5.nrostatic.com/sites/default/files/styles/original_image_with_cropping/public/uploaded/manafort-indictment-no-signs-trump-russia-collusion.jpg?itok=ero_wJBy

The Paul Manafort indictment is much ado about nothing . . . except as a vehicle to squeeze Manafort, which is special counsel Robert Mueller’s objective — as we have been arguing for three months (see here, here, and here). Do not be fooled by the “Conspiracy against the United States” heading on Count One (page 23 of the indictment). This case has nothing to do with what Democrats and the media call “the attack on our democracy” (i.e., the Kremlin’s meddling in the 2016 election, supposedly in “collusion” with the Trump campaign). Essentially, Manafort and his associate, Richard W. Gates, are charged with (a) conspiring to conceal from the U.S. government about $75 million they made as unregistered foreign agents for Ukraine, years before the 2016 election (mainly, from 2006 through 2014), and (b) a money-laundering conspiracy.

There are twelve counts in all, but those are the two major allegations.

Anti-togetherness: The Virtues of Disunity

We spend our time with people of our own culture. Jews flock together. We have Chinatown, Little Saigon, Little Italy. Good ol’ boys and Boston Brahmins do not party  together.

A Truth Not Welcome: People do not like being with those different from themselves . Sometimes, briefly, we find it interesting, as in traveling, but for extended periods, no. This distaste pervades society, often unnoticed, with consequences.

Instances of untogetherness:

People cluster by intelligence. With high consistency, we choose mates of intelligence close to our own. Likewise with friends: If you have an IQ of 100, or 150, you are unlikely to have friends of 150, or 100. Bright people join Mensa not from snobbery but because they want to be around people like themselves. On the internet this takes the form of distributed cognitive stratification in which people from around the globe congregate by intelligence.

A woman I knew while living in the Heart of Darkness once said, “In Washington, you assume that everyone is in the ninety-ninth percentile.” She herself was, and her friends were chemists, high-end journalists, authors, and so on.  She meant her remark as shorthand for a common sort of clustering.

Kudlow: Best Economy We’ve Had in 10 Years

The economy is now at its best in a decade, according to economist and CNBC regular Larry Kudlow.

“The business side of the economy, the supply side, is doing very well,” Kudlow said Sunday on New York AM 970 radio’s “The Cats Roundtable.”

“It’s the best showing we’ve seen — I don’t know, probably in over 10 years,” he added. “It’s as though businesses are sniffing out tax cuts, and they’re starting to pull the trigger on some investments. And that, of course, will lead to higher wages. I like that a lot because that’s been the worst area of the economy, business investments, and I think the stock market loves it.”

The Second Amendment Is A Test

 http://media.breitbart.com/media/2015/05/2nd-amend-tat-Facebook.jpg

There is no estimation of the lives saved by the Second Amendment, not just in deterring crime and criminals, but also in deterring the government from its worst temptations. As Mike Vanderboegh detailed in The Vanderboegh Tapes currently available on Vimeo, when he talked to a federal agent many years later, the agent told him that after the assault weapons ban was passed, before it became law and four million semi-automatic rifles were sold (more than had been sold in the previous twenty years) the agent admitted that it rattled them. Because the feds understood that people weren't buying all those guns to turn them in after the ban went into effect, they were forced to reconsider the next step which was to confiscate those weapons.

It's not that the media doesn't understand this, it is because they are pushing a narrative that comports with their collectivist leanings. They want the government to be in control of everything, either because they see themselves as somehow benefiting from the collective, or because they are immune to history and fact-blind to statistics. This is true even when those statistics are produced by the Center for Disease Control. They force the belief that a communist/collectivist future is somehow more humane. There is no point arguing that this is false and easily dispelled by history, because they are communists. In a lot of ways, they want revenge on history, if you can fathom that.

Judge Directs Military To Accept ‘Transgender’ Recruits

 transgender

Even if they were females they certainly wouldn't get any attention from the opposite sex. :)

A judge says she has the authority to countermand the Commander in Chief’s July decision to reject transgender applicants for military service, highlighting the judiciary’s continued efforts to seize political power from legislators and President Donald Trump.

The claim was made October 30, when Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia denounced Trump’s ‘Presidential Memorandum’ ending President Barack Obama’s policy of recruiting people who think they are members of the opposite sex.

She insisted that Trump’s policy be blocked pending a full trial:

The Court will preliminarily enjoin Defendants from enforcing the following directives of the [Trump] Presidential Memorandum, referred to by the Court as the Accession and Retention Directives:

I am directing the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Homeland Security with respect to the U.S. Coast Guard, to return to the longstanding policy and practice on military service by transgender individuals that was in place prior to June 2016 until such time as a sufficient basis exists upon which to conclude that terminating that policy and practice would not have the negative effects discussed above.

French High Court Orders Removal of Cross Above Statue of Pope John Paul II

The French administrative court has ordered the removal of a cross from a monument to Saint John Paul II in a public square in the northwest of France, saying it violates the secular nature of the state.

Italian media noted the irony of the ruling, remarking that the cross-removal is not taking place “in Raqqa, the capital of the Islamic State in Syria, but in Brittany, in the heart of Western Europe.”

The Conseil d’Etat, France’s highest administrative court, ruled last week that the statue of the Polish Pope in Ploërmel, Brittany, could remain but the large cross above the monument must be eliminated.

“Since the cross is a religious sign or emblem within the meaning of Article 28 of the Law of 9 December 1905 and its installation by the municipality does not fall into any of the exceptions provided by this article, its presence in a public location is contrary to this law,” argued the French court.

The Antebellum South in the Reformation Tradition

On October 31, while many parents whisk their little ones from house to house in the pursuit of temporal tasty treats, a large portion of Christendom will be observing the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, a movement which arguably changed the very course of Western Civilization up through the present. Many Protestant denominations, seminaries, churches, and para-church organizations are sponsoring trips and teachings, hosting conferences and conviviality in recognition of the great Solas that inspired the Reformers to separate from the Roman Catholic Church. If one were to attend an average American evangelical service on any given Sunday during the month of October, one would likely hear a sermon on one or more of the five Solas: Sola scriptura (“Scripture alone”), Sola fide (“faith alone”), Sola gratia (“grace alone”) Solo Christo (“Christ alone”), Soli Deo gloria (“glory to God alone”).

The common narrative usually goes something like this:

Trey Gowdy: Dems $10 million payment for what they’re labeling ‘opposition research,’ is akin to money laundering.

Republicans in Congress are hinting that they want former Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former head of the DNC, to answer questions about the Democrat party funding of an infamous Russia/Trump dossier.

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Trey Gowdy, went so far as to call the DNC’s near $10 million payment for what they’re labeling ‘opposition research,’ is akin to money laundering.

“I’m not an election law expert, but the good news is you don’t have to be,” Gowdy said, “to understand the absurdity of believing that you can launder all of your campaign money by just hiring a law firm.”

“I’m interested in that,” he added.

It appears he has entrapped them all in this scandal called Uranium One.   The FBI and the Deep-State.  James Comey.  Eric Holder.  Loretta Lynch.  The Clintons.  Barrack Obama.  The leftist news media.  Real collusion, with a real crime.

There is an answer to Hillary’s question, “What Happened?”

And yes, it should be considered a dumb question rather than a book title.  But the short answer to her question is:  She fooled almost the entire left, for over two decades.  Oh wait, that was a book title, not a question.

And therein lies her biggest problem.  She’s not really asking the question as she should be, she’s not reflecting.  Instead, she’s wagging a finger and blaming everyone else for her loss.

Back to the Clintons fooling the left.  Let’s start counting the ways.  She was not just smart, she was the smartest woman ever.  She was fully competent and capable in everything.  She fought bravely for all the right issues.  She was more qualified to be President than anyone who preceded her.  She was, and is, the bright moral compass pointing the way forward to the left (who they believe should be all of us).  She was the Yin to her husband’s Yang.  They were the best power couple ever, a beacon of truth shining in the darkness.

Except they weren’t.  She has proved that over time, and her book tour is confirming it.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee claimed Sunday it would be nearly impossible to prove collusion between President Trump's associates and Russia.

"I think that it's easier to find Bigfoot and Amelia Earhart than it is to find collusion between the Russians and Donald Trump," Huckabee told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday morning.

Huckabee, whose daughter Sarah Sanders works as White House press secretary, said special counsel Robert Mueller's team ought to seriously focus on the near-$1 million that Obama for America and $5.6 million Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign paid the Perkins Cole law firm since the group funded the Fusion GPS research on the Trump dossier.

"If Mueller doesn't go after that, then I think that he shows that all those people he hired who were Hillary donors were in fact there as shills for the Democrats in trying to protect her rather than protect America," Huckabee said.

The key is that the indictment comes in late October.  Right before a November election. There is pattern of October indictments against Republicans.

Peter King wants Robert Mueller to answer Congress' questions about 2009 uranium deal

Via Billy

New York Rep. Peter King wants special counsel Robert Mueller to come to Congress to explain why the FBI didn’t sound the alarm louder about a deal to sell a company in control of uranium reserves to a Russian company.

King said Sunday on Fox News that Mueller, who was FBI director from 2001-2013, has some questions to answer about the deal that saw a Russian state-controlled company buy Uranium One, a company that controlled 20 percent of American uranium reserves.

The deal had to be approved by nine American government agencies, including Hillary Clinton’s State Department, and went through in 2009.

Devastating: Judge Jeanine Pirro‏: "It's time...Time to shut it down. Turn the tables. And lock [Hillary Clinton] up."

Vietnam Dissident’s Daughter Calls on Melania Trump for Help

 Image: Melania Trump

The 10-year-old daughter of a jailed Vietnamese blogger, “Mother Mushroom,” has appealed to U.S. First Lady Melania Trump to help win her mother’s release ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to Vietnam next month.

The handwritten letter, posted on Facebook on Thursday, drew attention to Vietnam’s biggest crackdown on dissidents in years before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November.

Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, 37, known as “Me Nam” (Mother Mushroom), is one of Vietnam’s most prominent activists. She was jailed for 10 years in June for publishing anti-state reports, including one about deaths in police custody.

Her daughter Nguyen Bao Nguyen, nicknamed “Mushroom,” referred to Trump’s upcoming visit to Vietnam and the “International Women of Courage Award” awarded by the First Lady to Quynh in March, which drew an angry response from Hanoi.

Timing of Muellers counter narrative to Uranium One very suspicious (My Immediate Thought)

With the Fusion-GPS/Uranium One mega-scandal unfolding, it's time for a counter-narrative.  And there's nothing like an indictment – a fact on the ground – to grab attention away from theories and evidence and investigations – especially with the MSM demonstrating Soviet levels of ideological conformity.

With perfect timing, a wave of media hysteria is building up for Monday's roll-out.  News was leaked last night to Trump's "very fake news" foe, CNN:

Obama Appointed Islamic Society Official To Approve Russian Uranium Sale and Gulftainer Port Deal

The Obama administration placed Aimen Nabi Mir, former two-time president of the youth wing of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), into the top advisory position to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a national security post at the Treasury Department.

Aimen Mir was the CFIUS Staff Chairperson from 2009 until 2014. During that time, Aimen Mir played a key role in the CFIUS panel’s decision to approve the sale of Uranium One to Russia’s Rosatom. Mir also played a key role in the Treasury Department’s refusal to investigate the UAE’s Gulftainer 35-year cargo container terminal lease at Port Canaveral, a critical military infrastructure facility for U.S. naval and space operations. Both decisions severely damaged United States national security.

Newt Gingrich: The Clintons started the so-called Russian collusion scandal and may be destroyed by it

The Left has been desperately working for months to find any shred of evidence that Donald Trump had even the slightest connection to Russia during the presidential campaign. Despite having the full support of their friends in the media, they have consistently failed to find anything substantive.

At first, I assumed the liberal elites were simply driven by their inability to accept that the American people elected Donald Trump as their 45th president. Now, I have another theory: The Trump-Russia story is meant to serve as a pure distraction aimed at masking real corruption by the Clinton political machine.

Hannity: Now that Dems, media have their real Russia scandal, they are silent

For more than a year, Democrats and their pals in the abusively biased press have been breathlessly talking about Russia-Trump collusion as if it were the worst scandal in American history.

After a year, the best they can do is somberly insist there is smoke, but no fire. The truth is, there is no smoke. Trump collusion with Russia has been a big lie.

Not that there wasn’t Russian collusion with a 2016 presidential candidate. It’s just that her name was not Trump. We now have real evidence that the FBI uncovered a Russian plot dating back to 2009 that involved bribery, extortion, blackmail, money laundering and racketeering. It all came a year before Hillary Clinton and the Obama Administration approved the corrupt Uranium One deal.

The Russian nuclear deal continues to be kept under containment by media fearful that it might contaminate their ability to attack President Trump.

In the latest development, The Hill reported that, an FBI informant was cleared to testify on the issue. “The Justice Department on Wednesday night released a former FBI informant from a confidentiality agreement, allowing him to testify before Congress about what he witnessed while undercover about the Russian nuclear industry’s efforts to win favorable decisions during the Obama administration,” the newspaper said.

A Bipartisan Dossier of Collusion

Via Billy

At every turn, Democrats get tangled in their own ‘collusion’ web. Have you noticed that we are no longer talking merely about “the Trump Dossier”? Ever since the Washington Post’s startling revelation this week that the dossier was commissioned and paid for by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, there’s been a subtle tweak in the coverage. Now, reports allude to the research that led to the Trump dossier. Why the shift in emphasis? Because the Democrats and their media accomplices are doing what they do best: controlling the terms of the public discussion in order to obfuscate.
