The "Sandy" was probably the pinnacle of prop drive ground support aircraft. She was designed during WWII but never saw combat. The Navy's intent was for it to be used in combined operation with the F8F Bearcat flying cap to protect from enemy fighters. But the the top brass was convinced jets we're the best thing since sliced bread in spite of their short range and Gastly fuel consumption. Additionally the Bearcat proved highly unstable and killed far to many pilots. My Uncle was among it's victims and he was hard an inexperienced pilot having flown everything from Buffalos to Corsairs with both a Navy Cross and a DFC.

Sorry to hear this and where did it happen?
The Cmdr started out with his first combat assignment with VF11 at Guadalcanal. He finished the war as a Squadron Commander flying off the Lexington only to be killed in a training exercise in a Bearcat at Miramar in CA while preparing a new squadron as CAG on the USS Saipan CVL48. He was only 35.
