Be Very Careful Before Beating the War Drums in Syria

Russia’s involvement in the conflict raises the stakes of any U.S. action.

War has consequences. Callous incompetence has consequences. The world is watching those consequences unfold in Syria today. No one can look at images of children dead from gas attacks and not be moved. Let’s stipulate two things: First, there were never any easy American choices in Syria.

Second, the Obama administration got virtually every hard choice wrong. Or, to be more precise, the choices it did make did nothing to either stop the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the new century or block our enemies and rivals, Iran and Russia, from exerting their will in Syria. The result is the Syria we have today, a patchwork quilt of competing zones of control that in some ways looks more complicated than it is.

  1. I had really hoped Trump would have avoided more conflict. Personally, I think the "gas attack" was a false flag. But with no proof, he had to do something. President Assad with the Russian help was winning. There was no reason for a chemical attack. The only effect of a chemical attack would be to draw an American response. President Assad did not want that. Russia did not what that. Now think who did want an American attack in Syria. The Military Industrial Complex and the Elites that get rich off never ending war.

      Not in my view, he should have stated that the earlier one had been debunked by the UN and all should wait until they check this one out. All the rest I agree with, but I am thoroughly disgusted. First he screwed up the healthcare deal and now this.

    2. I too am thoroughly disgusted. I'll never listen
      to another word he says. Major problems in this
      country yet he has the 'power' to attack a
      sovereign country without an investigation but no
      'power' to clean out sanctuary cities or violent
      gangs. His campaign promise "made in the USA";
      his own daughter's clothing line is made in China.
      Trump is real familiar with the Swamp.

  2. I just now read an opinion that Trump's missile barrage was really only a signal to Assad and others (Putin? FatBoi?) that there is a set of gonads in the White House now.
    The explanation does make me see the Syria attack in a new light.

    1. I believe he would have been a lot better sticking to his plan on becoming Russia's friend.
