A Georgia Volunteer, Mary Ashley Townsend

Mary Ashley Townsend found a grave of a soldier in Stribling's Spring, Virginia, shortly after the war, and wrote this:

A GEORGIA VOLUNTEER

Far up the lonely mountain-side
My wandering footsteps led;
The moss lay thick beneath my feet,
The pine sighed overhead.
The trace of a dismantled fort
Lay in the forest nave,
And in the shadow near my path
I saw a soldier’s grave.

The bramble wrestled with the weed
Upon the lowly mound;—
The simple head-board, rudely writ,
Had rotted to the ground;
I raised it with a reverent hand,
From dust its words to clear,
But time had blotted all but these—
“A Georgia Volunteer!”

I saw the toad and scaly snake
From tangled covert start,
And hide themselves among the weeds
Above the dead man’s heart;
But undisturbed, in sleep profound,
Unheeding, there he lay;
His coffin but the mountain soil,
His shroud Confederate gray.

I heard the Shenandoah roll
Along the vale below,
I saw the Alleghanies rise
Towards the realms of snow.
The “Valley Campaign” rose to mind—
Its leader’s name—and then
I knew the sleeper had been one
Of Stonewall Jackson’s men.

Yet whence he came, what lip shall say—
Whose tongue will ever tell
What desolated hearths and hearts
Have been because he fell?
What sad-eyed maiden braids her hair,
Her hair which he held dear?
One lock of which perchance lies with
The Georgia Volunteer!

What mother, with long watching eyes,
And white lips cold and dumb,
Waits with appalling patience for
Her darling boy to come?
Her boy! whose mountain grave swells up
But one of many a scar,
Cut on the face of our fair land,
By gory-handed war.

What fights he fought, what wounds he wore,
Are all unknown to fame;
Remember, on his lonely grave
There is not e’en a name!
That he fought well and bravely too,
And held his country dear,
We know, else he had never been
A Georgia Volunteer.

He sleeps—what need to question now
If he were wrong or right?
He knows, ere this, whose cause was just
In God the Father’s sight.
He wields no warlike weapons now,
Returns no foeman’s thrust—
Who but a coward would revile
An honest soldier’s dust?

Roll, Shenandoah, proudly roll,
Adown thy rocky glen,
Above thee lies the grave of one
Of Stonewall Jackson’s men.
Beneath the cedar and the pine,
In solitude austere,
Unknown, unnamed, forgotten, lies
A Georgia Volunteer.

Eddie Ray Routh, the ex-Marine who shot and killed “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield at a Texas gun range in February 2013, was found guilty Tuesday evening of the murders.

His attorneys had been pursuing an insanity defense, but his pleas were rejected. Since prosecutors weren’t seeking the death penalty, Routh received an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole.

The disappeared: Chicago police detain Americans at abuse-laden 'black site'

Via Joe

The Chicago police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.

The facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square, has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic constitutional rights.

The UN Has A Plan For What Americans Can — And Can’t — Watch On TV

Fat kids are serious business. So serious, in fact, that the United Nations is urging countries to let its bureaucrats micromanage what foods are allowed to advertise on TV.

The European branch of the World Health Organization (WHO), the health arm of the U.N., is trying to stop childhood obesity by urging countries to adopt an international blueprint that would ban almost all food advertisements targeted at children and place substantial regulatory influence in the hands of the UN.

FCC leadership refuses to let public see new internet regulation proposal

Three days before the Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote on the most significant Internet regulations in history, two commissioners are asking Chairman Tom Wheeler to delay the vote and release his proposal to the public.

“We respectfully request that FCC leadership immediately release the 332-page Internet regulation plan publicly and allow the American people a reasonable period of not less than 30 days to carefully study it,” Republican Commissioners Ajit Pai and Michael O’Rielly said in a statement Monday.

“Then, after the commission reviews the specific input it receives from the American public and makes any modifications to the plan as appropriate, we could proceed to a final vote.”

VERBATIM

If you break into admission statistics to elite colleges and universities you discover a pattern of “disparate impact” (as the civil rights term of art goes) against Asians. It appears Asians are being actively discriminated against just as Jews were for decades.

The New York Times reported in November:
To get into the top schools, they (Asians) need SAT scores that are about 140 points higher than those of their white peers. In 2008, over half of all applicants to Harvard with exceptionally high SAT scores were Asian, yet they made up only 17 percent of the entering class (now 20 percent). Asians are the fastest-growing racial group in America, but their proportion of Harvard undergraduates has been flat for two decades.
Yesterday the Los Angeles Times made the ugliness of this discrimination even more vivid:
Lee’s next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant’s race is worth. She points to the first column.
African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says.
She points to the second column.
“Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.”
The last column draws gasps.
Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points — in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.
“Do Asians need higher test scores? Is it harder for Asians to get into college? The answer is yes,” Lee says.
Zenme keyi,” one mother hisses in Chinese. How can this be possible?
It’s possible because today’s racial liberalism isn’t about equality, merit, and “diversity” at all, but has become a straight out racial spoils system. When more Asians start to figure this out, I suspect they’ll change their voting habits.

Poll: Gabby Giffords’ Home State Abandoning Gun Control

 AP Photo/The Sun, Alonzo Wright

A new poll shows that Gabby Giffords’ home state of Arizona is abandoning gun control, partly because fears of imported jihadism are growing.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, the poll was conducted by the Behavior Research Center (BRC), which found that a large portion of the 48 percent of Arizonans who supported more gun control in the wake of Sandy Hook have now changed their position, with only 33 percent favoring more gun control.

Forty-eight percent of Arizonans “think the current level of gun control is just fine.” That figure represents a 10-percent increase from the poll taken after Sandy Hook.

Gall Phizí: Hunkpapa Lakota leader at Battle of the Little Bighorn

 Chief Gall.png

Since the early 1980s, archaeological researchers conducted battlefield excavations after a major grass fire. Historians have been studying accounts by participating Indians and tribal oral histories. Based on these elements, a contemporary reassessment of the Battle of the Little Bighorn has given Gall greater credit for several crucial tactical decisions that contributed to the Sioux and Cheyenne's overpowering defeat of the five companies of cavalry led by Custer of the 7th Cavalry.
Gall, Photographed by David F. Barry at Fort Buford, North Dakota, 1881.

Major Marcus Reno's initial attack on the southeast end of the Indian village killed Gall's two wives and several children. Gall described it: "My heart was very bad that day." During the opening phase of the battle, the Lakota and Cheyenne repulsed Reno's three companies of cavalry from the south-eastern end of their large village. Gall was one of the few Indians to suspect that Custer's strategy was probably a two-pronged attack. He believed that determining the location of the other half of Custer's attacking force was critical to Indian defense.

Gall crossed the river and rode to the northeast, where he spied Custer's chief scout, Mitch Bouyer, returning to Custer from an overwatch of the Indian village. After locating the main element of Custer's five companies, Gall correctly determined that they probably intended to force a river crossing and an entrance into the northern end of the village. Riding back down from the bluffs, Gall told Sioux and Cheyenne forces returning from Reno's repulse of his suspicions. With Crazy Horse, he led forces north across the river to drive Company E and F due north up present-day Calhoun Couley to present-day Finley Ridge. There they forced three of Custer's companies to fight a largely defensive battle.

Within minutes, Gall and his forces took a position north east of Finley Ridge and poured a withering fire down on Companies C, I and L. When Crazy Horse charged through an opening between Lt Calhoun's Company L and Company I in a sudden surprise right envelopment attack, Company L probably began to pull back off the ridge to try to link up with Company I. Companies C and L's tried to redeploy from holding off Gall's men to the east and others to the south. This probably looked like a panicked retreat to Gall and his forces.

Seeing that the two Cavalry companies no longer had the fire superiority that held the Indians at bay, Gall and his men attacked from the east as the other Indians attacked the cut-off elements of Company C from both the east and the south. They soon finished off Companies C and L, and forced survivors and some of Company I to flee towards Custer and his men north of the so-called "Last Stand Hill." A few of the soldiers of Companies C, I and L also fled south toward the river. The places where they fell were later marked by white marble monuments, which still stand.

Soon the Indians finished off Custer and his men in the remaining companies C, E, and K. The last approximately 28 survivors made a dash south for the river. They were trapped in the box canyon called "Deep Ravine". After killing them, the Indians had won the battle, having completely annihilated Custer's five companies.

In later years, Gall recounted his role in the battle. He had mistakenly thought the survivors of Custer's three southeastern companies fled northwest to Custer because they ran out of ammunition. The horse soldiers may also have fled after losing their will to fight, as many men simply ran, even abandoning loaded rifles. The Sioux and Cheyenne picked these up and fired the weapons to drive off the soldiers' horses, thus depriving them of a key tactical mobility advantage. The native warriors' attacking Greasy Grass Ridge from the southeast came mostly on foot. Gall kept up enfillading fire from the northeast.[5]

Defensive blades for pistoleros

T-shaped knives have been with us for millenia. This particular design became very popular as a primary carry weapon in the US during 19th century, later being supplanted by small pistols. Recently, with a variety of affordable and good quality models by Cold Steel, their popularity has risen again.

ISIS Burns 8000 Rare Books and Manuscripts in Mosul

This and the ancient Buddhist statues make me sick.

While the world was watching the Academy Awards ceremony, the people of Mosul were watching a different show. They were horrified to see ISIS members burn the Mosul public library. Among the many thousands of books it housed, more than 8,000 rare old books and manuscripts were burned.
“ISIS militants bombed the Mosul Public Library. They used improvised explosive devices,” said Ghanim al-Ta'an, the director of the library. Notables in Mosul tried to persuade ISIS members to spare the library, but they failed.

The former assistant director of the library Qusai All Faraj said that the Mosul Public Library was established in 1921, the same year that saw the birth of the modern Iraq. Among its lost collections were manuscripts from the eighteenth century, Syriac books printed in Iraq's first printing house in the nineteenth century, books from the Ottoman era, Iraqi newspapers from the early twentieth century and some old antiques like an astrolabe and sand glass used by ancient Arabs. The library had hosted the personal libraries of more than 100 notable families from Mosul over the last century.

Was Keynesian Economics The Product Of A Guy Who Was SUPER High?

 https://danieljmitchell.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/ae78f-riley_keynesian_toon.jpg

John Maynard Keynes, the namesake of Keynesian economics and among the most influential economists in history, was on a heavy regimen of mind-altering drugs when he negotiated with the United States to create the modern economic order, according to a British journalist and economic historian.

“It’s a little-known fact that John Maynard Keynes was dosed up on mind-altering drugs when he carried out one of the most important economic negotiations in British history,” writes Ed Conway for Medium. Conway is the economics editor of Sky News and recently authored the book “The Summit,” about the pivotal Bretton Woods Conference held in 1944.

Following the defeat of Germany in 1945, Keynes, in the last year of his life, was sent to the U.S. by the British government in order to negotiate an agreement to provide financial aid for his bankrupt government. Keynes was expected to play hardball with the Americans, extracting either a grant or an interest-free loan, and threatening to blow up negotiations if his country didn’t get its way.

Instead, in a baffling negotiating failure, Keynes entirely capitulated to American demands.

U.S. military decimated under Obama, only ‘marginally able’ to defend nation

The U.S. military is shedding so many troops and weapons it is only “marginally able” to defend the nation and falls short of the Obama administration’s national security strategy, says a new report by The Heritage Foundation Tuesday.

“The U.S. military itself is aging. It’s shrinking in size,” said Dakota Wood, a Heritage analyst. “And it’s quickly becoming problematic in terms of being able to address more than one major conflict.”

President Obama’s latest strategy to size the armed force pledged in 2014 that the four military branches have sufficient troops, ships, tanks and aircraft to win a large war, while simultaneously acting to “deny the objectives of––or impose unacceptable costs on––another aggressor in another region.”

Thanks, Obama: Poorest Obamacare Recipients Billed $531 By IRS

The burden of Obamacare is hitting the program’s poorest recipients with a $531 tax bill by the IRS that cuts into their returns by 17 percent, according to a study conducted by H&R Block. In the study, Americans making 133 and 400 percent of the federal poverty level qualify for a tax credit to purchase health insurance. But, in the end, 52 percent will actually owe the IRS money. The study also found that the average individual mandate penalty is $172 (via ATR):

Wonder how much money they wasted determining what was originally evident ......?

The Justice Department says George Zimmerman will not face federal civil rights charges in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The department announced its decision Tuesday, saying that there was not enough evidence to bring federal civil rights charges, which would have required proof that the killing was motivated by racial animosity.

Denver Cops Cry Foul Over ‘N’ Word Discipline

 (credit: CBS)

A Denver police officer has been disciplined for uttering the “N” word during a confrontation with a citizen, but fellow officers — several of them African American — say the context was not offensive, the discipline unwarranted, and that the case shows how DPD officers are not supported by their administration.

“This is political correctness gone awry,” said Detective Victoria Oliver, an African American DPD officer who also sits on the board of the Denver police union, the Police Protective Association.
Oliver made her comments after viewing videotape CBS4 obtained of the incident which occurred Oct. 18, 2014 during the Zombie Crawl event in downtown Denver.

Officer Adam Paulsen, who is white, was called in to assist with the event after fights broke out and the crowd became unruly. Paulsen was wearing a police-issued body camera, which Denver police officers began employing in 2014. His camera recorded video and audio of what happened and CBS4 obtained the officer’s tape.

At one point Paulsen is approached by a young man who is attempting to walk through an area officers were trying to keep clear.

The man, who appears to be African American, said to Paulsen, “Nigger, I’m trying to get through.” Paulsen responded, “I am not a nigger, walk around to your family.” The man then said, “I’m trying to get through homie.” Paulsen responds, “I’m not your homie either, just walk around.” The man then proceeds to follow the officer’s orders.

Al $harpton Hit With $20 Billion Racial Discrimination Lawsuit

 http://thefinereport.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Jeff-Foxworthy-know-youre-a-moron1.jpg

The National Association of African-American Owned Media alleges that Sharpton and other advocates have been bought off.

Even though the FCC hasn't yet ruled on the proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable, one group has already filed a lawsuit claiming at least $20 billion in damages from the way the two giants allegedly discriminate against black-owned media.
The complaint, filed in California on Friday, comes from the National Association of African-American Owned Media, which also filed a similar suit against AT&T and DirecTV in December.
This time, the plaintiff is not only targeting both Comcast and TWC — on the eve of the two companies merging to become what would be the largest pay television distributor in the United States — but also various African-American advocacy groups and MSNBC host Al Sharpton for allegedly facilitating discrimination.

Obama to Nigerian Christians: Change Laws on Abortion, Homosexuality If You Want Protection from Boko Haram

Kidnapped schoolgirls are seen at an unknown location in this still image taken from an undated video released by Boko Haram

A Catholic Bishop from Nigeria has leveled an explosive charge against President Barack Obama over his failure to adequately help Nigeria in the African nation’s fight againt the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram that might explain why Obama has let Boko Haram slaughter Nigerian Christians and rape and enslave Christian girls.

Bishop Emmanuel Badejo spoke in Rome to Aleteia, saying of the Obama administration:
“The United States actually said it would help Nigeria with Boko Haram only if we modify our laws concerning homosexuality, family planning, and birth control.”

A Wall Street Journal article about an interview with Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan published last week described “various issues” supposedly keeping the Obama administration from providing more support to Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram, but did not mention the morals issues claimed by Bishop Badejo.

Mugabe's Victoria Falls Feast, by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London

Via Nancy

https://www.newsday.co.zw/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/mugabes-88th-birthday.jpg

I can’t imagine that anyone in his right mind would actually want to go to the 91st birthday party of Robert Gabriel Mugabe, which takes place this Saturday.

It promises to be an event of truly spectacular moral ugliness. While his people are starving, the ancient despot will convoke 20,000 cronies at a kind of golf club-cum-safari lodge near the Victoria Falls. In scenes reminiscent of the more disgusting and luxurious behaviour of the emperor Commodus, he will cause various exotic beasts to be slaughtered for the feast.

Five impalas will be roasted, two sables, two buffaloes – and then, to the ululations of his drunken Zanu-PF supporters, there will be a series of culinary climaxes, each more revolting than the last. A local farmer has procured two elephants, and after these rare and majestic creatures have been butchered for the delectation of the semi-deified Mugabe, there will be one more type of meat to come – an animal that you might think was semi-sacred, whose killing should be taboo, a creature that people would never normally dream of eating. Yes, a lion, the king of the animal kingdom, will lay down its life before the meat-maddened mob and have the honour of surrendering its mortal flesh to the palsied gullet of the man who still calls himself the “Hitler of Africa”.
