LA Times: Men Carry Guns to Address ‘Social Insecurities’

(Editor’s note: I had a chance to interview Ms. Carlson about her op-ed and her book, check out the interview here.)

An interesting op-ed in the Los Angeles Times argued that men around the country carry firearms to address “social insecurities far beyond crime.”

In other words, your reason for carrying a firearm is not rooted in practical self-defense, rather you carry because you’re compensating for your inability to bring home the bacon on a consistent basis.

Jennifer Carlson, the author of the article, wrote, “As men doubt their ability to provide, their desire to protect becomes all the more important. They see carrying a gun as *a masculine duty and the gun itself as a vehicle for a hardened kind of care-work — caring for others by shielding them from danger, with the threat of lethal force.”

* Does that mean it's a feminine duty when females carry?  Just curious..........:)

  1. Poor thing. I'm guessing she's never been hunting, she lives in a city, she's never seen a rabid animal, and no one has ever tried to rape or rob her. Someone else has always protected her, yet she derides them. Stay safe, lady.

  2. Jennifer, honey you don't have the slightest clue as how men think. First, you are a female. Men and women view reality differently, we are hardwired to view and respond from a different perspective. Second since you write for that left coast rag, you have no clue as to how those who live in fly over land think. Nor can you grasp the concept that many men own firearms because shooting a firearm is fun. I would rather spend an afternoon at a shooting range than on a golf course or sitting watching other grown men play a game. BTW, men are hardwired to be protectors.
If men have any insecurities, it comes from the ilk like you and the other male bashing feminists, who continue to paint men as bumbling idiots, rapists and the root of all evil in the world.
