The Power of Fred

Fred is 71 years old and keeps coming back like a bad penny. The fact is, however, that retailers who hire Fred year after year from Thanksgiving to Christmas love him.

We just learned that the United States added 321,000 jobs in November. The most since 2012 if you believe the BLS’ Establishment Survey. Not so sunny if you believe the Household Survey which showed only a 4,000 job increase to 147,287. But let’s go with the BLS’ numbers and get back to Fred.

  1. Here is my eyewitness account:make your our judgement.
We went to Jacksonville , NC to shop mostly for Christmas on Dec. 4. Toys R Us, one clerk at check-out and no body else visible in the store to ask questions or assist, next door at the Marshalls, 1 check out clerk and no one else visible. Sam's Club, 2 check out lanes and no one else visible. Hardly looks like a booming employment situation. Plus the stores were not very busy.

    1. Yes and Thanksgiving spending was way down and this Obama recovery is all smoke and mirrors. Do you live near Jacksonville?

  2. We have two Sams within 90 miles of each other (mid Wisconsin)and they are both always busy. Usualy 4-6 lanes open. One city is 45,000 the other 70,000. But in between where I live small business is weak. We do have a mail order retailer called Figi's and they employ a few hundred "Freds" several months out of the year. Ive noticed over the past 5 years the "Freds" have been working less hours and shorter seasons. Im also aware of a lot of folks with Bachlor degrees delivering pizza and working in gas stations. Not 100% sure I can blame el presidente' for all our current economic woes, but I am certain he has made the future of America 100% worse.

  3. And the idiots that work at McDonalds are in the street protesting for $15.00 and hour.
They best be careful what they wish for or there will be a lot of folks with letters after their names taking orders and making sandwiches and the idiots will be out of work altogether. 15 bucks an hour minimum wage? Can you think of any educated, working stiff these days that couldn't give up 15 or 20 hours a week of spare time to work a few 5 hour shifts in a fast food store for an extra kilobuck per month?

I know I would and I would spend the whole shift texting my friends and complaining about the job.
