Long-time educator reassigned for bringing replica musket to class for lesson

An eighth grade history teacher in Florida with over 20 years on the job has been reassigned after she incorporated a prop gun into a lesson on the Revolutionary War.

Osceola County Schools has temporarily barred Gema Evans, a social studies teacher at Neptune Middle School in Kissimmee, from having contact with students. Evans, hired by the district in 1993, was reassigned to a non-teaching role due to an ongoing investigation on her use of what is being described as a “prop rifle” in a classroom for a presentation on the American War for Independence.

  1. When my brother was still teaching social studies 15 or so years ago, he took our dad's real Japanese WW2 samurai sword to class and did a fierce demonstration on top of his desk, a la John Belushi. He sure did get everyone's attention. Today, he would either be in jail or the mental hospital for his lively teaching methods.
I won't comment on how dumb these school system administrators are - Home School!

  2. Anything but educate the children they are charged with. We can't have that! When administrators begin showing up dead, then perhaps the teachers will start resigning or doing their jobs.

  4. That's their winter - how did it work out for you - good to get out of Vietnam's heat? My son is looking at college librarian jobs in California - is he crazy for doing that? Don't some of your kids live out there?

    1. We had a good time, but Thailand was the place to go and went many times. They are in California, because that is where I accepted a job after the evacuation of Saigon. You get two choices, you can turn down the first, but if you turn down the second, you are out and I thought my second could be in some God-forsaken cold Yankee state:) so I took the first! :)
