Cop says showing kindness to a shoplifter was 'the right thing to do'

Officer Stacy hands the woman some eggs and gets a hug.

It is not unusual for cops to get a call about shoplifters during the holidays.

"Usually it's candy. Usually they have enough money in their pocket to pay for it," Tarrant police officer William Stacy said.

On Saturday, someone tried to steal eggs from the Dollar General on Pinson Valley Parkway. But  Stacy said this call was different. He said the suspect told him, "I shouldn't have done that but my babies need food." Officer Stacy had met the woman before so he was somewhat familiar with her situation.

"You can't let kids go hungry. I ran inside bought the eggs for her and walked out and handed her the eggs," Stacy said. "She tried to give me all the money she had on her which was $1.25. I told her to keep it. I don't want it. The way she can repay me is to never do this [shoplift] again."

Stacy gave her a hug and left but what he didn't know was that another customer, Robert Tripp, recorded the exchange.

  1. Makes me wonder what she spent the WIC and SNAP money on. And what happened to all the food from the food bank in her area. It's always like this. Some do -gooder gets caught on video being nice to someone only to find out later it was a scam. Like the cop who bought the homeless guy nice outdoor boots and the guy sold the boots for pocket change.

  2. Because there are no charities that can give food to the truly needy anymore.

    1. I see canned foods being collected around here and I assume they are given away.....?

    2. Yes. That was kinda my point - sarcasm.

While certain cities don't allow food being distributed to the needy (NYC) this woman feels her only option is to steal from a store. I guess it's better than breaking into someone's house.

The store, therefore, has to raise prices to level out loss.

and if this woman's kids are in public school, they most likely get subsidized breakfast AND lunch.

There is a HUGE problem in this country (one of many) and it all revolves around the huge overbearing presence of too much government.
Stores, restaurants, schools have to throw out large amounts of food due to regulations while people are going hungry, a lot of them because they refuse to work or have children and take off to not support them.

Like genericviews, I can't watch this and feed sympathy anymore. I just feel like bashing my head against the wall.

  3. The food bank in my area is very active. They give away tons of stuff and most of their "customers" are also on other forms of assistance. But the more food they get for free, the less of their snap money they need to spend on food. The food bank doesn't ask if you are poor or legally in the USA. it is their job to give the stuff away and business is booming. Expecially during the holidays when they can guilt trip every office and school into collecting canned goods. They honestly can't give it away fast enough. If thereis anyone in this country starving, it is either because they are a child of intentionally neglectful parents, or they are simply too stupid to eat.

  4. Just try giving a can of food or some frozen food from your freezer to one of the charity groups. The can better not be one day past it's expiration date or they won't take it. I once had a refrigerator go bad and the freezer section was full of meat.
I loaded it all in a cooler, iced it down and set out to give it away. Couldn't do it!
OF COURSE frozen food is past the expiration date on the label!!!!! You wouldn't freeze it if you could use it by the expiration date! But I couldn't give it away. The soup kitchen wouldn't take it so I went down into the "poor" section of town and found a preacher coming out of his church. I asked him if the church or anyone he knew could use the food. I explained that I had just taken it out of my freezer. He told me he didn't know any folks that were hungry! All around me were little shack rental houses with folks sitting on the front porch for lack of anything better to do. They surrounded his church but he didn't know anyone who needed some food and didn't even seem to appreciate me offering it.

All I can tell them is they better not show up at my house begging after the flag goes up. CH

  5. They wont take my eggs, either. I have chickens. My eggs are fresher than store eggs that can be weeks old.

We (the US) have an abundance of food now. Not going to last
