Kid misses Common Core math problems because he didn’t use ‘friendly’ numbers

In Common Core math, it often is not good enough to get the correct answer. Instead, students are required to show “higher order” thinking skills — in this case, use of the associative property. Yes, the associative property is important and should be taught at some point. Unfortunately, we suspect that many 7-year olds will not be able to understand this particular assignment.  With limited days in the school year, wouldn’t second graders — second graders! — be better off spending their time attempting to master the traditional subtraction algorithm?

  1. WTF What is a "friendly number". Only a liberal could and would FUBAR some thing so basic as grade school math.
Math answers are either right or wrong. Period. I don't think any one wants a "friendly number when it comes to how much money you have, the dosage of your medications, your cars mpg, or design of the aircraft you want to fly in.
It ought to be a shootable offense to use the term social justice when it comes to math.
AND....what the F--k is wrong with these teachers that after how many DECADES, they still can not figure out how to teach the subject to grade schoolers.

Or hanging and I guess these teachers have little incentive to do better because of their security in many states though NC has cracked down on it somewhat recently.

  2. I have a 7 year old in school, and let me tell you this is FAR worse than you think. This is part PC part political indoctrination. The teachers want the number they tell the student to wright down. The only "correct" action is unquestioned obedience. Thinking independently, talking, moving, asking too many questions, are all punished with public humiliation , threats , and eventually medication for those that don't "conform to standards". Parents are ORDERED to hand over access to medical history's and POA (we refused) by the heath Dep. This go's on and on, with the school increasingly looking more like a Hitler youth camp than anything I remember from the 60's. The communist indoctrination, revised history, DAYLY lectures on PC "attitude" are chilling. I swear I can introduce you to teachers that are card carrying members of the ACP and were chosen for the job of elementary school teacher because of it. 3. GOD help us

Indeed. The polls favor it, but a large number of people do not know what it is, so the more we educate, the better luck we have with getting rid of it.

  4. As if their total failure at teaching and waste of billions (needlessly) is not enough, now the illiterate Moron's are spending another 100 million advertising falsehoods to parents!
