Anyone with a concealed handgun permit will no longer be able to take guns into any city government building, park or recreational facility.
The Wilson City Council approved by a 5-2 vote an ordinance Thursday that bans concealed handguns from any building owned by local government and at any municipal recreation facility, including athletic fields, swimming pools, gymnasiums and their associated facilities.
Councilman Donald Evans, who spoke against the ordinance in November, and Councilman Logan Liles voted against the ordinance. Councilwoman Gwen Burton and Councilmen A.P. Coleman, Tom Fyle, Derrick Creech and James Johnson III voted for the new law.
Daniel Cox, a Wilson resident, veteran and former military officer, spoke before the vote and asked the council to uphold his right to bear arms.
"Gun control as a means of public safety is an ineffective means of preventing violence,” Cox said. "It has effectively only accomplished disarming responsible law-abiding citizens.
"Since its inception, gun control has been a political mechanism to make people feel safe without actually providing any measurable security. Therefore, I ask that you oppose this ordinance and make a commitment to support the inalienable rights afforded to us in our Constitution.”

DeleteIf they passed an ordinance banning guns in whole parks, they are very stupid indeed, since that is illegal. Not yet having seen the ordinance, however, I strongly suspect the newspaper has it wrong.

That statement is categorically wrong and should be corrected ASAP. We have reviewed Wilson's ordinance. In compliance with our newly amended NCGS 14-415.23 ("Statewide Uniformity"), the ordinance does NOT ban guns in parks except in narrowly defined "recreational facilities" which principally include athletic fields (only during scheduled events), swimming pools and appurtenant facilities, and gymnasiums. It specifically does not include greenways, hiking trails or other open areas of any park.
In short, the ordinance complies with state law. This article is whipping up hysteria and needs to be corrected ASAP.
