FBI: More People Killed with Hammers, Clubs Each Year Than Rifles

According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle.

This is an interesting fact, particularly amid the Democrats' feverish push to ban many different rifles, ostensibly to keep us safe of course.

However, it appears the zeal of Sens. like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) is misdirected. For in looking at the FBI numbers from 2005 to 2011, the number of murders by hammers and clubs consistently exceeds the number of murders committed with a rifle.

Think about it: In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618.

And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant.

For example, in 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs.

While the FBI makes is clear that some of the "murder by rifle" numbers could be adjusted up slightly, when you take into account murders with non-categorized types of guns, it does not change the fact that their annual reports consistently show more lives are taken each year with these blunt objects than are taken with Feinstein's dreaded rifle.

Another interesting fact: According to the FBI, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands and fists each year than are killed by murderers who use rifles.

The bottom line: A rifle ban is as illogical as it is unconstitutional. We face far greater danger from individuals armed with carpenters' tools and a caveman's stick.

And it seems fairly obvious that if more people had a gun, less people would be inclined to try to hit them in the head with a hammer.

It is time the critics of the Second Amendment put up and repeal it, or shut up about violating it.  Their efforts to disarm and short-arm Americans violate the U.S. Constitution in Merriam Webster’s first sense of the term—to “disregard” it.

Hard cases make bad law, which is why they are reserved for the Constitution, not left to the caprice of legislatures, the sophistry and casuistry of judges or the despotic rule making of the chief executive and his bureaucracy.  And make no mistake, guns pose one of the hardest cases a free people confronts in the 21st century, a test of whether that people cherishes liberty above tyranny, values individual sovereignty above dependency on the state, and whether they dare any longer to live free.

A people cannot simultaneously live free and be bound to any human master or man-made institution, especially to politicians, judges, bureaucrats and faceless government agencies.  The Second Amendment along with the other nine amendments of the Bill of Rights was designed to prevent individuals’ enslavement to government, not just to guarantee people the right to hunt squirrels or sport shoot at targets, nor was it included in the Bill of Rights just to guarantee individuals the right to defend themselves against robbers, rapers and lunatics, or to make sure the states could raise a militia quick, on the cheap to defend against a foreign invader or domestic unrest.

The Second Amendment was designed to ensure that individuals retained the right and means to defend themselves against any illegitimate attempt to do them harm, be it an attempt by a private outlaw or government agents violating their trust under the color of law.  The Second Amendment was meant to guarantee individuals the right to protect themselves against government as much as against private bad guys and gangs.

Vice President Joe Biden “guaranteed” Mayor Thomas M. Menino — a leading national gun control advocate — that President Obama will pass sweeping firearms reforms by the end of the month, the mayor said today.
“He said, ‘Tommy, I guarantee you, we’ll get it done by the end of January,’” Menino said at City Hall today. “They’re going to get it done.”
The mayor, who has been recovering from a host of ailments for the past two months, said Biden called him several times while he was in the hospital, including a call after the Newtown school massacre to discuss gun control.
Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg co-chair the 500-mayor-strong Mayors Against Illegal Guns and have called for a national gun reforms in the wake of last month’s Sandy Hook school killings.
“I understand the second amendment, the right to bear arms. But I don’t understand how young kids should be able to get guns,” he said.
Menino added that the president has “no excuse not to pass strong (gun reform) legislation,” since he is in his last term and doesn’t have to worry about angering pro-gun voters or the National Rifle Association.

Tea Party Promises Primary Challenge to Chambliss

 

The Tea Party — furious that Sen. Saxby Chambliss voted in favor of the fiscal cliff bill this week — says the Georgia Republican can expect a vigorous primary challenge in 2014 in a bid to kick him out of office.

“I can tell you I live in the state of Georgia and Saxby Chambliss is going to be primaried. Our own senator,’’ Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer told CNN.

“It's unacceptable to have somebody who votes with the Democrats more than they do with the conservatives, and he has proven time and time again he's all about the spending.

“We're a red state, we deserve a conservative senator, a conservative senator that would stand with Marco Rubio and Rand Paul and Mike Lee who all voted 'no' for this bill.’’

Chambliss has roiled tea party members for his bipartisan work on issues from immigration to reducing the debt, according to The Hill.

Kremer’s vow comes on the heels of conservative blogger Erick Erickson’s threat to mount a primary challenge against Chambliss.

Boehner Telling Reid To “GFY”? Not A Big Deal

For all the complaints we conservatives have about Speaker John Boehner, there can be no denying that we felt a certain camaraderie with him, a certain pride that he is on our side, at least in party affiliation, when we learned that he told Senate Majority Leader Harry Read to “Go f*** yourself”–twice–after Harry Reid likened him to a dictator.

“John Boehner seems to care more about keeping his speakership than about keeping the nation on firm financial footing,” said Reid, adding that the House was “being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker.”

Politico reported that Boehner muttered his awesome rebuke the next day, when Boehner saw Reid at the White House.

“Reid, taken aback, said, ‘What are you talking about?’ And Boehner repeated it. Boehner’s office has confirmed the validity of these claims, but offered no further comment on the matter.”

For maybe six seconds after hearing of this incident, I wanted Boehner to run for president. That quickly faded, of course, but it’s still nice to see Boehner have at least some backbone, even if in such a way that’s irrelevant to his leadership.

But whenever a Republican does something classless–and I don’t deny it was classless of Boehner to tell Reid to self-mate–liberals suddenly become virgin-eared nuns.

“Go F” was trending on Twitter Wednesday morning, with liberals reporting on the matter and then editorializing that it was “unprofessional” of Boehner, or saying sarcastically that it was “real classy.”

The Twitter account of NorthDecoder.com wrote, in part, “Republican Civility = Go F__k Yourself.” But what, it’s not uncivil for Vice President Joe Biden to call Tea Partiers “terrorists”? It’s not uncivil for the President to accuse his opponent in his re-election bid of giving women cancer and wanting women to die? It’s not uncivil for him to say, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun”?

When President Obama was signing his healthcare legislation and Joe Biden muttered loudly into his ear and into the microphone, “This is a big f***in’ deal,” liberals thought it was the greatest thing they’d ever heard. There was no sniveling from the left about Biden’s lack of professionalism.

The difference is that Boehner was not in a congressional session–it was overheard by others, but it was still a private conversation. Joe Biden was in a professional environment, an official ceremony of sorts. Not that I care either way; I don’t.

But even more unprofessional and classless than Biden’s BFD moment and Boehner’s GFY moment was when Obama’s campaign website decided it prudent to sell t-shirts to capitalize on the crassness.

The shirts read, “Health Reform Still a BFD.”

Now if the Republican National Committee starts printing and selling t-shirts that read something along the lines of “Hey, Reid, GFY!” then I’ll complain about that. But a private moment between two individuals? Get over it.

Most of you have heard of the panic buying that has been occurring since proposed gun control legislation has been discussed daily on the news. We wanted to try to keep our customers informed of what we see going on from our end, both bad and good.

First the BAD:

1. There are extensive shortages of several key items. Products that may be banned are often no longer in stock, such as mags over 10rds for AR-15, AK-47, popular pistols, and ammo in key calibers. The urge to stock up on these items continues to be very strong and we are unsure what supply will be like in the future. Manufacturers may not be able to keep up, some stating that future supplies will be limited for quite some time, especially on AR and AK rifles and magazines.

2. Prices are going up. This is a fact of life during shortages due to increased demand and short supply. If you browse gun auction websites you will see the value of items climbing daily. Luckily most of the prices at J&G Sales have not changed and remain stable, although some items have increased, or will soon. The increased prices are due to several factors, including:


A. Suppliers who have increased our costs when we order replacement stock.
B. Suppliers no longer importing or producing certain items at all, making what is currently available no longer replaceable and increasing its value.
C. Some price increases to allow items to be available to more people over a longer period, preventing a few resellers from buying everything.

Now the GOOD:

1. Many suppliers are ramping up production to try to get product to the dealers to restock as soon as possible. We are expecting AR-15 mags to continue coming in, as well as handgun mags, and ammo. Shipments will probably be smaller than previously, as manufacturers try to spread around the supply and not ship it all to only one or two dealers. Gun production is more difficult to increase, and many manufacturers were already running close to full capacity before the rush. We do expect more domestically produced guns, although AR style rifles will probably be available only in small batches. Unfortunately, we do not expect a steady supply of AK style rifles for some time.

2. Prices seem to be stabilizing a bit, although they will continue to be extremely volatile depending on the details of new legislation, and on continued word from manufacturers regarding future availability.

In summary, we hope these times will pass and enough government representatives will remember their oaths of office and keep our freedom intact. We at J&G plan to stick it out for the long haul and continue to supply our customers into the future. We pledge to you that we will not cave to outside societal pressure and will stay loyal to you and continue selling lawful items to law abiding citizens.

This 1963 Chevrolet Corvette split window coupe is a crown jewel in the fabulous John Justo Collection. An unrestored original with a mere 5,500 miles on the odometer, it is a multiple award winner in the hotly contested collector Corvette hobby, having earned Bloomington Gold Certification, places in both the 1995 Bloomington Gold Special Collection and the 1997 Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame. It has also been decorated with the coveted NCRS Top Flight Award. With its exceptionally rare combination of Riverside Red paint, matching Red interior and 327/340 HP engine – the most powerful carbureted engine in the 1963 lineup – this high-caliber Sting Ray coupe is very much an archetypal example of the breed.

As befits its status, it is also exceptionally well documented with the original sales invoice, window sticker, title facsimile and Protect-O-Plate. New York Legislature to Introduce Bills Making Posession of Any AWB Firearms Illegal, Remove Grandfathering

The New York Legislature is set to consider a bill that would vastly expand the state’s current “assault weapons ban.” Here’s some of the, er, highlights:
  • All firearms must either be rendered inoperative or surrendered to the police. No grandfathering, no exceptions.
  • Removes the “grandfathering” exception for possession of magazines with a greater than 10 round capacity.
  • Bumps up AWB-firearm possession from 3rd degree “criminal possession of a weapon” to first degree, putting simple possession of such a firearm at the same level of punishment as Rape 1 or Manslaughter 1.
Oh, and the whole thing is severable. So if one section is ever declared unconstitutional, the rest of it stays. Full text here. There are also two other bills being considered . . .

Cabella’s Charging Medical Device Excise Tax on Receipts

Why the medical device excise tax should have been applied to all the items listed in the receipts pictured above is something of a mystery. 

The state of Texas (where these receipts are said to have originated) allows sellers to pass along the expense of the new medical device excise tax to customers by “separately stating a line item charge on the invoice or receipt given to their customers for ‘Federal Excise Tax’ or something similar,” but the vendor, Cabela’s, is a retailer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor recreation merchandise not known for selling medical devices, and the items listed in the receipts (such as a Ruger Attache Pistol Case) would not seem by any stretch of the imagination to fit FDA definitions of medical devices. 

It’s possible that some vendors switched over to new sales software on 1 January 2013 that was programmed to accommodate the new tax but improperly applied it to all purchases rather than just those of qualifying medical devices.

Al Gore’s Current TV Rebuffs Advances by TheBlaze, Agrees to Sell Channel to Al Jazeera

Seeking to expand its presence in American television, al-Jazeera, the Qatar-owned news network, has agreed to buy Al Gore’s low-rated Current TV, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but a person familiar with the matter said al-Jazeera paid a few hundred million dollars for Current TV. The network, which was co-founded by Mr. Gore and entrepreneur Joel Hyatt in 2005, has recently been struggling with low ratings.
The multimillion dollar deal came after Current rebuffed TheBlaze when it approached the network about buying the channel last year. According to a source close to the negotiations, officials at TheBlaze were told that “the legacy of who the network goes to is important to us and we are sensitive to networks not aligned with our point of view.”

An executive for TheBlaze confirmed these details on Thursday, noting that the decision not to sell to Beck’s network came only hours after executives reached out to a Current representative to discuss the matter. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Hyatt said that the decision to go with the Middle Easter outlet came, in part, because, “al-Jazeera was founded with the same goals we had for Current.”

This admission on the part of Current clearly shows that the network aligns itself with al-Jazeera — at least when it comes to goals and aspirations — something critics will likely question. As the AP noted, Dave Marash, a former “Nightline” reporter who worked for the network for a time, left in 2008 after sensing an anti-American bias.

Illinois Dems advance ban on most modern firearms

Illinois Senate Democrats advanced legislation late Wednesday to restrict semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines, pressing forward with new gun control measures in the waning days of the session over the objections of firearms groups.

Amid the developments, the Illinois State Rifle Association issued an “urgent alert” to its members warning them that Democratic legislators were trying to push through last-minute anti-gun legislation.

“There would be no exemptions and no grandfathering,” the group stated in its alert. “You would have a very short window to turn in your guns to the state police and avoid prosecution.”

For four hundred years in this country, my family has had a well-earned reputation for being well-armed, and of not being afraid to use those arms if life, liberty, property, or their communities were threatened.

I'm a descendent of Alice Proctor, the wife of Virginia ancient planter John Proctor. In the Indian attacks and massacres of 1622 in which as many as a third of the Virginians were killed, John was in England, and she and her household held off the savages for a month. The British officers threatened to burn down the Proctor Plantation if she didn't remove herself from the frontier back to Pace's Paines, which she then had to do, but the Indians knew better than to ever come anywhere close to her or her family again.

A few generations later, at the start of the Revolution, five Proctor brothers, including my forebear Little Page Proctor, were part of the Virginia militia that secured the NW wilderness against the British-allied tribes. They were among the forty men with Daniel Boone who held off more than 400 Indians for ten days at Boonesborough, in what became Kentucky.

They knew that when it came down to it they had to depend on themselves and their neighbors, not on some far-off government.

Anyone who thinks it is fundamentally any different now is fooling themselves.

Congratulations on your appointment to lead a presidential commission to end gun-related violence.
As a National Rifle Association board member, husband, father, grandfather, law enforcement officer and genuinely concerned American, I too want nothing more than to see evil, senseless massacres stopped. I concur with the president and caring people everywhere: It’s time to end these slaughters.
As you gather your team to study massacres and how to stop them, I offer to you my services and a lifetime of expertise on guns in all their implementations. While I strongly differ with President Obama on many issues, I agree with him that we must work with all we can possibly muster to end these tragedies.

As you begin to formulate your thoughts on how to proceed with your task, I hope your starting point is to provide the president with the facts regarding these slaughters and to offer him common-sense recommendations that are void of a political agenda and will actually make a meaningful difference. If the American people smell a political agenda here, that will only bog down our efforts.

In the spirit of goodwill and a deep desire to end gut-wrenching, incredibly sad and senseless rampages, I offer you the following recommendations:

I encourage you to persuade the president to lead this effort by providing a number of public service announcements. The announcements should include watching out for each other, encouraging parents to be more involved in their children’s lives regarding entertainment choices, and knowing various indicators we should watch for in people who are unstable.

Clearly, the focus on solving these mass murders must be on the mentally ill. In almost every instance of mass killing, there were ample red flags and warning alarms that either were avoided or were not acted upon by mental health professionals, family members, friends and acquaintances. While I deeply respect an individual’s privacy and civil liberties, the American people need basic awareness of what indicators to look for regarding potentially violent, psychotic people. Our collective safety begins with being collectively vigilant.

You will find in your assessment that all of the massacres have occurred in gun-free zones. What gun-free zones create is an environment where good people are unarmed and virtually defenseless against an unstable person intent on committing mass murder. Gun-free zones are modern killing fields. I implore you to recommend that Congress pass a law to ban gun-free zones immediately.

GRNC Alert 1-3-13 National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban

We face a grave federal danger of the type not seen since 1994. Not only is absolutely everything about the Feinstein/Obama/Biden scheme unacceptable, if even a portion of it passes they will be back for more almost immediately.

That was precisely their M.O. in 1993-94 when they ran the Brady Act, the “Violent Crime Control Act (semi-auto ban) and would have followed with the truly draconian Brady II had the 1994 Republican Revolution not intervened.

We are starting to see Republicans cave, and there is an excellent chance the ban will pass the Senate, meaning it will have to be stopped in the House. I hope you agree that absolutely no “compromise” is possible because, as is so often the case, “compromise” as defined by our opposition is a process in which we lose just slightly less than in the original proposal.

More than most, Howard Coble is showing all the signs of becoming particularly squishy on this subject.  He recently said:
"At the same time, I also believe that the right to bear arms must be exercised responsibly.   Congress can do its part by carefully monitoring crime and updating our criminal laws where change is deemed appropriate.  Although these changes should be reflected in our firearm laws, they should not be used as a guise to diminish the Second Amendment."

So far, the NRA is making all the right noises, but will they do the right thing when the ban begins to move? Or will they do as they did on armor-piercing handgun ammunition in the 1980s, on the Brady Act, on the first rendition of the Lawful Commerce in Firearms Act, on the NICS Improvement Act and most recently on the Disclose Act? Namely, will the NRA “compromise?”

‘NATIONAL COALITION TO STOP THE GUN BAN’

That is why GRNC, in conjunction with other groups, has formed a national coalition to defeat the Obama/Biden/Feinstein proposal.

  • 19 state and federal organizations have so far joined the “National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban,” including all of the groups listed below;
  • The objective of the coalition is to kill the proposals. Period. Not to “compromise” by saddling gun owners with restrictions and whining “It was the best we could get.” Nothing less than the death of the Obama/Biden/Feinstein proposals will suffice;
  • All coalition members have agreed that “compromise” is not an option; AND
  • Coalition members launched with a coordinated “Open Letter to Members of Congress” which is listed at the bottom of this alert, and with coordinated press releases and membership alerts.

We find absolutely nothing about Senator Feinstein’s proposal to be acceptable: Not banning guns, not registering guns and gun owners via the National Firearms Act, not registering private gun sales via the National Instant Check System, and most certainly not expanding BATFE police powers which are already being abused.

“'Compromise,' as our opposition defines it, is a process in which freedom-loving Americans lose slightly less than under the original proposal. Consequently, in the most egregious attack on Second Amendment freedom in our history, we will not 'compromise.'”
