One of the problems with analyzing government behavior is figuring out whether a particular bureaucratic action is due to breathtaking ignorance, utter stupidity, clinical insanity, or Lovecraftian evil. When Common Core first appeared I naively attributed its manifest failings to the ignorance, stupidity, and insanity of its architects. I've since concluded that it is in fact conceived in evil, motivated by evil, and executed with evil intent.
