 Aaron Alexis

Aaron Alexis has been identified by police as the dead Washington Navy Yard shooter, NBC News reports.

Alexis, 34, originally of Fort Worth, Texas, recently began working at the Navy yard as a civilian contractor, the station reported. The FBI confirmed his identity in the afternoon.

Alexis was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, two law enforcement officials tell the Washington Post. One of the sources said he also had a shotgun. All the weapons have reportedly been accounted for. His aunt, Helen Weeks, told the paper that he grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. with his mother, Sarah, and father, Anthony.

At least 13 people were killed -- including Alexis -- and more were wounded at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building after at least one gunman opened fire after 8:20 a.m. Monday, a Defense Department official said.

  1. I was in MD about 80 miles west of DC this morning when the news broke. On my drive back to NC all of the radio news stations were riveted on the story with varied and confusing reports of details. One reporter disputed herself twice within about 10 miles of my drive.
The one thing they were consistent on all the way until I reached the radio no mans land from about Stony Creek Va to the NC line was that the shooter was a 34 year old white male from TX.
Even after I got into NC and the radio started to work again I heard no further reports on the identity of the shooter except his name.

Imagine my shock (NOT) to get home, turn on Fox News and see a photo of the shooter. I'm sure my shock was not nearly as severe as the disappointment of the media when the truth came out. I'm sure they were drooling at the thought of blaming it on the tea party.

general discharge from Navy - why?

arrested 2004 for shooting tires out - apparently no trial or conviction - why?

arrested 2010? for shooting inside apartment - again no apparent trial or conviction - - why?
