House votes 221-207 to limit federal control over education

The House approved legislation on Friday that would dramatically limit the federal government's power to set education standards across the country, reversing the policy put in place a decade ago under President George W. Bush.

Members voted 221-207 to pass the Student Success Act, H.R. 5, which reverses many provisions of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law signed by Bush in 2002. Every Democrat voted against it, as did 12 Republicans.

In the short term, the legislation could do nothing more than lay down a GOP marker on education. The Democratic Senate is expected to ignore the House bill and work on its own ideas, and the White House said this week that President Obama would veto the bill.

  1. The house is full of idiots. Even worse are the neocon apologists that give the excuse that "R's have no real power, they only control 1/3 of the lawmaking, the senate and executive have the power.
I call bull on that excuse. They control the purse. What do they do? Vote for continuing resolutions perpetuating this disaster. "But they will be labeled negative and extremists and cause the government to shut down". I call bull again.
Try this: Pass individual spending bills. No funds for out of control departments. Severely limit where the funds can be spent. The Senate will balk but they will be the ones to shut things down, not the House. Make it the dem's problem. No more continuing resolutions.
I maintain they (R's) do not want this problem fixed. They are the problem. And I repeat, traitorous idiots.
