Holy Mosquito Bite Batman! It’s Summer Time!

 by

Do you remember the ‘60s TV show, Batman? Twice weekly, Batman and Robin treated audiences to their own brand of campy slapstick comedy, awash in the fiendish antics of the Daring Duo’s roster of villains: the Joker, the Penguin, and the Riddler, as well as others. These cunning scoundrels taxed the Daring Duo’s patience, as well as the Duo’s ability to eradicate them. Each show ended with a cliffhanger, leaving the audience to ponder if Batman and Robin would survive. But the Daring Duo may have met their match had they traveled south via the Batmobile and experienced a Mississippi Gulf Coast summer with its heat and those flying, biting Harpies of the South – the pesky mosquito.

  1. You haven't suffered until you've experienced high lattitude mosquitos. Since the summer is so short, they all hatch at once, are super aggressive and their bites leave something like a blister. People have actually died on the tundra from mosquitoes, though more from being driven mad and stripping then dying of exposure, but seriously, they're so thick it can be hard to see through them.

Sleeping in the car on the Alcan, one night, we rolled the windows down and tried to sleep since it was cool. The mosquitoes swarmed in so quickly that we immediately cranked the car and rolled the windows up. Too late. About a hundred were in the car and we were forced to run the AC to keep them down. As soon as we'd turn the AC off, we'd hear that horrible little high pitched whine and they'd start biting. this went on all the next day and we covered the dashboard and windows with squished 'skeeters.
