SGT Stubby

"The noise and strain that shattered the nerves of many of his comrades did not impair Stubby's spirits. Not because he was unconscious of danger. His angry howl while a battle raged and his mad canter from one part of the lines to another indicated realization."

- New York Times Obituary

Sergeant Stubby was a stray, homeless mutt who saved more lives, saw more combat, and performed more badass feats of heroic awesomeness than most people could ever hope to accomplish even WITH the advantage of prehensile thumbs and the ability to utilize 100 percent of their brain power without exploding into a burst of ball lightning.

The American version of Voytek the Soldier Bear, this fearless, ass-destroyingly ferocious Pit Bull Terrier started his humble life as most stray animals do – hungry, cold, alone, and stranded in the town of New Haven, Connecticut. Living garbage can to garbage can without so much as a doghouse roof over his head, one day this poor dejected little canine happened to stumble onto the parade ground on the campus of Yale University, where it just so happened that the men of the 102nd Regiment, 26th Infantry Division were training for their eventual deployment to fight in World War I. The so-pathetic-it's-adorable little dog-creature was taken in by a soldier named John Robert Conroy, who named the pup "Stubby" on account of the thing's little stumpy gimp tail (or maybe this is a common trait of pit bull terriers, I have no idea). Conroy started leaving food out and let the little guy sleep in the barracks from time to time, and before long pretty much every dude in the 102nd thought this thing was omg totez adorbs, etc. The dog, for its part, was also like insane-as-hell smart, and I don't mean like, "Oh hey that dog thinks he's people because he sits in an armchair and licks beer coozies" stuff, but more like, "Holy crap balls Lassie's trying to tell us that Little Timmy fell down a well and is being slowly digested by a thousand rabid snakes sent forth from a rift in the Hellmouth," smart. After just a few weeks of hanging around the drill field, watching the soldiers do their thing, this friggin' dog/Battle-Cat hybrid learned the damn bugle calls, could execute the marching maneuvers with the men, and was – I shit you not – trained to salute superior officers by raising his forepaw to his brow in what I can only imagine was a sight so cripplingly adorable that nowadays it would be an obnoxious, long-running Internet meme on one of these I Can Has Catburger websites.

Private Stubby had free reign to drink out of any toilet bowl on the Yale campus during training, and when the order came down for the 102nd to ship out to battle Conroy just stuffed the dog into his greatcoat and smuggled him on board a ship bound for France. Once the transport was under way, Conroy brought the dog out onto the deck, and all the sailors all decided this dog was so totally flippin' sweet that they had a machinists' mate make him a set of dog tags to match the ones worn by the soldiers. When Conroy got a little sloppy and his weirdo covert dog smuggling operation was discovered commanding officer, Conroy gave the order to, "Present Arms," the goddamned dog saluted the commander. The officer was like "WTF ever" and from that point on Stubby was officially allowed to follow Yankee Division out to the battlefront.

They Want Blood

Unionswantblood

 Sword At The Ready
VERBATIM

A nation is on the precipice of French Revolution-styled bloodbath as the MarxoFascist Left and Union Thugs call for blood.

The Left.  The Right.  Secularists.  Christians. Socialist Liberals.  Conservative Constitutionalists.  Democrats.  Republicans.  Unions.  Non-Union.  Government Sector.  Private Sector.  Welfare State.  Individualist State. The divide between Americans gets deeper, more entrenched and the calls for open violence are escalating.  Not since the early 1860′s has the nation been at a crossroads of impending violent conflict.  As the nation declines and the economy collapses into a MarxoFascist tyranny – Obama’s regime is stoking  civil conflict while at the same time preparing domestic agencies for a bloodbath via buying up millions of rounds of hollow-point ammunition.

.At the same time, as tea leaves point to conflict –  myriad factions and groups are readying themselves for what appears to be an inevitable course towards violence. The canary in the mine may have just been the latest round of union thug violence.

The MarxoFascists and their gravy Train sycophantic worshippers of the State, along with the money-laundering operation between Unions and the Democrat party are already getting violent, threatening to kill their opponents while taking to the streets.  Merely questioning their demands, or being opposed to their monopoly on cronyism – is met with violence.

This kind of intimidation, coupled with a kind of ‘austerity’ of devolving Union thuggery from it’s iron grip over a man’s right to work without confiscatory dues that go to Democrat politicians in exchange for more monopoly – is a precursor to the seething rage of America’s unity boiling just below the surface.  The moment someone stands up to Obama’s Brownshirt Union thugs and the MarxoFascists in power – it all comes unravelled and these promises of blood, will not go unfulfilled given history.

And of Course Obama’s Propaganda Media is silent, when during the TEA Party rallies and opposition to ObamaCare the same media went overboard to castigate the protesters as racists, bloodthirsty demons, insurgents, ‘screaming racial slurs/epithets’.  But when actual violence and threats for bloodshed are screamed by Union thugs and Democrats….. crickets.  Redefinition of what actually is going on.

Obama’s Union thugs and MarxoFascists may say they want blood now. Once that turn begins, America will rue the day it started.  If civil war be our lot – the slaughter may not stop until millions are lost to it.

And maybe that will be God’s Righteous Judgment for our own slaughter of 2 generations of unborn.

Merry Christmas from Corruption NC

VERBATIM

Christmas is around the corner and the U.S. government is handing out borrowed money like candy, with you as collateral. Some people do think government is Santa Claus, and bureaucrats are all to happy to perpetuate that myth. The United States government today is forcing you, the tax payer, to pick up the tab for the wealthy in ways the Founders never imagined.

Redistribution of wealth supposedly takes from the wealthy and hands it over to the poor. But our government is redistributing in strange and mysterious ways, hardly living up to the Robin Hood mythology Obama likes to conjure up. In fact, the concept is turned completely on its head in today’s upside-down world.

Recently, a very well-off local doctor purchased 71 acres of land in our county. This doctor sits on the board of a lands conservancy group. Well, what do you know? He then donates the land to the conservancy group and lands a nice, big, fat, tax deduction for his generous donation. What is never brought to light is that you picked up the bill. He just moved the property tax burden to the remainder of the county citizens for all of the rest of land still being assessed taxes. Non-profit lands conservancy groups do not pay property taxes. Not only that, the land in question is taken out of any possible use for “perpetuity.” Yes. That means “forever.” So what happened to the availability of land for private use? It just became 71 acres more scarce. The theory of supply and demand tells you that the price of land just went up due to this scarcity. And you financed the whole transaction. How? By allowing this doctor to transfer some of his tax burdens over to the rest of the population and raise the property tax values at the same time, so you can pay more.

The tax deductions offered for this sort of transaction are many. Some are for property taxes, some for income taxes at different levels, locally, state, and federal. And here we are, in Gastonia, North Carolina and Gaston County paying some pretty stiff property taxes. And wondering why. Those of us still paying property taxes are making up the difference for guys like the doctor cited.

But it gets even better. We’ve gone from tax exempt status for non-profits to granting them lots of money. And when you hear about public / private partnerships, you might want to look into how many corporations have set up non-profit foundations in order to jump in on the tax benefits for the latest cause celeb. They are greasing all sides of the skids by taking donations and giving donations, and soaking the taxpayer by getting government grant money. Nice work if you can get it, eh? And even better, our government is colluding with them.

Another curious example happened this past year involving the Carolina Thread Trail and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. DSBG is owned by a private foundation and is supported by donations, as well as, various activities DSBG sells, such as wedding receptions, groups tours, a gift shop, etc. The land owned by DSBG, and incorporated into the Garden, was not targeted for any kind of other development that I could find in research. The DSBG Foundation is a non-profit and already is afforded tax exempt status. Donations to DSBG are tax deductible. The land is contained by the Foundation that owns it. Yet, DSBG was all too happy to sell off part of its land to the Carolina Thread Trail to supposedly turn 2.3 miles of it into a “nature trail.” This was a transfer of land from one non-profit to another. And what does that have to do with you? Taxpayers paid $1.5 million dollars to purchase this “nature trail” from DSBG to hand over to the Carolina Thread Trail. And that amounts to $652,000.00 per mile paid for a little walk through the woods. I’m not sure you can even access this trail without paying admission to the Garden. The $1.5 million grant came from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund, supposedly to “protect” the water from development. But again, this land was not targeted for development anyway. (Caveat here: I am a founding member of DSBG and I thought is was going to be continually a privately owned Foundation, separate from government funding. As a private foundation, and as a destination to enhance our county, I thought this would be a good thing, never dreaming our taxes would be confiscated to support it. And, I did not join DSBG for the purpose of tax deductions.) If that amount of money were not enough, there were posts with names of donors at the beginning of the trail when I walked it this past summer; donors who all took tax deductions for their contributions. I have no idea how much money they donated, but I recognized the names of several of them as locals known to have lots of money. And when you figure into the rest, that abstract unknown amount of money they took off their income taxes, you can add that to the pool of revenue going into this little venture.

Ducky! Well, speaking of ducky, I have another one for you in Mt. Holly, North Carolina. This one is called the Catawba River Greenway, previously known as the Mt. Holly Riverwalk. The city of Mt. Holly has secured $800,000.00 from the State Transportation Improvement Program for this little gem. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Transportation Improvements, I think of filling pot holes or widening roads. After all, the transportation budget gets money from our gas taxes. So one would think that, if the users pay for roads, then the gas taxes would go to roads. Instead, our gas taxes are being siphoned off for walking trails. Hmmmm, I guess walking is transportation, especially in high density inner cities where you really can’t afford to park a car. In fact the Smart Growth and Sustainable Development crowd have made it mandatory that certain percentages of transportation money go to walking trails, bike trails and lanes, and light rail, which is so expensive that no one can afford it.

The greenway people are very clever. They have managed to put greenways in several different categories so they can draw grants from many different departments of government. First they say it is for protection of the environment, so that brings in EPA money. Then they say it protects the water, so that comes under the State Clean Water Management Fund. Then they say the trails are for recreation, so next they can get money from Parks and Recreation funds. And then, if that weren’t enough, they figured out if they call these trails “transportation corridors,” they can tap into the transportation money at the state and federal levels. I haven’t found this yet, but why not put these trails under health and welfare, too? Might as well…and they probably will.

The non-profits supporting these tax breaks are closely related to the wealth management industry. Wonder why that is?? In fact, the last two directors of the Carolina Thread Trail came straight out of the banking industry to take the job with Carolina Thread Trail. The guy that is the CEO for The Nature Conservancy came straight from Goldman Sachs.
“Mark Tercek, President and CEO: Before joining The Nature Conservancy, Mark was a managing director at Goldman Sachs, where he played a key role in developing the firm’s environmental strategy. He headed the firm’s Environmental Strategy Group and Center for Environmental Markets, which worked to develop and promote market-based solutions to environmental challenges.”
It is not a far stretch these days from non-profit wealth management to protecting that Christmas stocking fund for the rich. So Merry Christmas to the well-heeled! We paid a lot of green for their new walking shoes and tax shelters and …..fa la la…la la!

No Escape

The nation is quickly coming to a place where there is no escape; the truism that as defined in the Constitution of the United States of America has no contradiction;" the South was well within its legal rights to separate itself from the broken contract forged with those of the North who opposed that separation". There are a lot bills that would come due payable to the people and region of the South, if the whole of the nation come to accept this fact.

Southern social and cultural genocide must take place because this is where the aforementioned idea festers and permeates into the thinking process of the citizenry. First break their spirit, (attack the one symbol that defines them as Southern); " the Confederate Battle Flag"

NC: C.S.S. Advance

 CSS Advance (1863)

VERBATIM

When it comes to reputation, the Confederate gunboat Advance knows no peer. During any retelling of the blockade runners, this North Carolina vessel has been more romanticized than any other.

In actual fact, the blockade runner Advance commenced her famous career as a schooner-rigged, side-wheel steamer built at Greenock, Scotland, by Caird & Co. Launched on July 3rd 1862 as the Clyde packet Lord Clyde, the vessel was jointly purchased by the State of North Carolina and firm of Lord, Power & Co., to serve as a blockade runner during the Civil War. With a displacement of eight hundred and eighty tons, a length of two hundred and thirty feet and beam of twenty six feet, she was built for speed. Powered by two, 2-cylinder oscillating side-lever steam engines with six boilers, two funnels and two sail bearing masts, her side-wheel paddles could achieve and maintain speeds in excess of twelve knots. Upon ‘delivery’ she was renamed Advance in honour of the Governor of North Carolina, Zebulon B. Vance. Governor Vance was dedicated to North Carolina having its own ‘navy’ and although loyal to the southern cause, often reminded the Confederate authorities that all cargoes shipped on his vessels were the property of North Carolina first and foremost.

Following completion, her new owners quickly fitted their new vessel with a single 20-pound rifle and four 24-pound howitzers. Advance also carried an impressive number of small arms for use by her crew in the event of being boarded. During Advance’s ensuing career, she would complete more than twenty, highly successful voyages and enjoy many more close encounters with Union blockading forces. Governor Vance appointed Thomas M. Crossan as Captain. Crossan, who unlike his contemporaries Wilkinson and Maffitt, was an officer of the North Carolina Navy rather than the Confederate Navy, played an integral part in the purchase of the vessel on behalf of the State; and following his appointment, ran the Advance through the blockade on twenty two occasions in little more than a year. His arrivals and departures from Wilmington and Bermuda were eagerly awaited and celebrated for their time-table regularity.

On more than one run, Crossan boldly took Advance through the blockade in broad daylight and on occasion, catching the Federal blockading fleet completely unaware of his presence. In late 1864 however, he was captured when the Advance, burning poor-quality coal and unable to sustain speed was overhauled by the Union cruiser USS Santiago de Cuba. Following Advance’s capture on September 10th, 1864 she was subsequently ‘condemned’ by the New York Prize Court and purchased by the US Navy that same month. After some refitting and repair, Advance was then commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on October 28th, 1864 with Lt. Cdr. John H. Upshur in command.

USS Advance departed New York City on October 30th, arriving off Wilmington, North Carolina on November 14th to join the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. In addition to her newly reversed role, that December she participated in the two abortive expeditions against Fort Fisher located on Confederate Point at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Advance resumed duty on the blockade on January 13th 1865. With the last deep-draft Confederate port closed, few runners continued to attempt making the ‘run’. Those that did were shallow draft vessels with limited cargo capacity, a fact alone that made blockade running less profitable, considering the danger involved. As a consequence, Advance participated in no captures during her duties there. In February, Advance put into Norfolk for a month of repairs before embarking passengers and sailing for New York City on March 13th. Three days later she was withdrawn from active service until the end of hostilities when she was renamed USS Frolic, the second U.S. Navy ship of that name. On June 12th 1865, she was re-commissioned under her new name with Lt. Cdr Upshur once more in command.

The USS Frolic was then assigned to the European Squadron as a dispatch vessel, a mission for which she was well suited by virtue of her small size and good speed. Arriving at Flushing, the Netherlands, in July 1865, she operated in northern European waters and in the Mediterranean until 1869. Again out of commission from May to September 1869, Frolic's next active service was patrolling the North Atlantic fishing grounds in April-October 1870. Following another period in reserve, she operated off New England for several months in 1872 and was then station ship at New York. In 1875-77, she cruised in South American waters as a unit of the South Atlantic Squadron. Decommissioned for the last time in October 1877, USS Frolic was sold in October 1883. She was a civilian ship, retaining the name Frolic, for a few years after that.

Cherbourg Cemetery: The “ancien cimetière” contains the graves of George Appleby and James King of the Alabama and William Gowen of the Kearsarge. With them is the grave of Passed Assistant Surgeon James J. Allingham of the USS Frolic, who died on October 13, 1865. He had spent most of the Civil War on the USS Conemaugh, which formed part of Farragut’s fleet before Mobile. The Frolic was originally the North Carolina blockade-runner Advance (or A. D. Vance) and was captured in September, 1864 by the USS Santiago de Cuba; it began a European cruise in July, 1865.

The Rise Of Golden Dawn

Rand Paul: GOP Could Become 'Obama-lite or Democrat-lite'

Sen. Rand Paul says caving in to tax increases in any debt reduction deal would ruin what Republicans stand for and turn the party into what he called "Obama-lite or Democrat-lite."

If that happens, he says, Republicans will have to share the blame if an agreement to avert the so-called fiscal cliff turns out to be a drag on economic growth and job creation.

"It all depends on what happens. If Republicans all decide to vote for raising the taxes half as much as [President Barack] Obama wants, and we still have a tax increase and Republicans are for it, it kind of ruins what we stand for, because what we stand for is limited government and less taxation," the Kentucky Republican told Fox News' Neil Cavuto Tuesday evening.

"I think if we go halfway or we split the difference with him, I think then both parties have their hands on it. When we go into recession, it will be confusing," he continued. "But I want to be the party of lower taxes and of limited government.

"And I think if we go halfway or become President Obama-lite or Democrat-lite, I don't think that is what I want to stand for. It's not why I ran for office."

Paul, a leader in the tea party movement, said if he thought raising taxes was good for the country he would go along with, but he believes "it will be the opposite."

"I want to stimulate the economy. The only way I know to stimulate the economy is to leave more money in the economy," he said.

"I have seen the way these guys spend the money up here [in Washington] and they are not responsible with your money," Paul told Cavuto. "They have not earned my trust. I don`t think they deserve to have any more of my money."

GOA Action Alert: NDAA BILL, CURRENTLY IN CONFERENCE, WOULD STRIP SERVICEMEN OF THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS

Over this past year, we have alerted you to the dangers of last year’s National Defense Authorization Act (or NDAA for short).

The NDAA could impact all Americans, including gun owners, by allowing them to be indefinitely detained without trial, based on simple membership in certain pro-gun groups or because of particular firearm-related activities.

But in addition to its problems with indefinite detention without trial, this year’s NDAA also contains, in the House version, a provision that would allow military psychiatrists and commanders to question large numbers of servicemen about the firearms they own.

This could open the door for the psychiatrists to send the names of active servicemen to the NICS system in West Virginia.  If this were to happen, tens of thousands of soldiers could permanently lose their Second Amendment rights.

The issue first came before Congress during last year’s defense authorization bill, which prohibited military commanders from asking servicemen about their private firearms.

This provision was a justifiable response to efforts by the military to register and, in some cases, ban firearms privately owned by servicemen, both on- and off-base.

Now, a suicide-prevention group has argued that, by trimming last year’s law to allow military commanders and psychiatrists to inventory the firearms ownership of persons they “reasonably” suspect could present a problem, this will somehow be the “silver bullet” to suicide prevention.

So legislators have tacked such language onto the House-passed version of the DOD bill.  The problem is that this “reasonable” standard is a very low threshold.

Here’s what we fear:  Under legislation enacted into law in 2008, the military psychiatrist’s opinion, in and of itself, would be enough to send the serviceman’s name to the NICS system and thereby take away his Second Amendment rights.  It is possible that, if the information is in a federal database, it could be trolled by the ATF and placed in the NICS system.

Already, more than 150,000 veterans have had their gun rights removed under exactly the same process.

Is it fanciful to assume this would happen with active duty servicemen?  Already, it is standard army practice to take away a soldier’s service rifle when a commander suspects he may be a problem.

So, if the conference adopts the new anti-gun language without simultaneously adopting an amendment -- offered by Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) -- to require a court order before banning a soldier from owning guns, we are convinced that the bill could create horrible Second Amendment problems.

Obviously, the federal government should not be involved in gun control at all.  The Second Amendment has clearly stated that our firearm rights “shall not be infringed.”

But Senator Burr has offered his language as a way to protect Americans who served their country honorably. Hence, the Burr amendment would require a court, rather than a “shrink,” to make a determination of suicide danger, before a soldier’s name could be sent to NICS and his Second Amendment rights could be permanently taken away.

The Burr amendment was unanimously passed out of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee as a free-standing bill, and should not be particularly controversial.  So, if commanders and psychiatrists are going to probe into servicemen’s gun ownership, why would we not want to add this protection to the mix?

The bottom line:  Before a serviceman, who has served this country honorably, loses his Second Amendment rights for the rest of his life, he should, at least, have a modicum of due process.  He should have his “day in court,” rather than being “adjudicated” solely by a psychiatrist.

And before groups with a record of failure begin scapegoating guns, it’s important to insure that these psychiatric inquiries don’t become a conveyer belt for taking away servicemen’s Second Amendment rights by routinely placing their names on the NICS list.

Veterans and active duty servicemen have served our country honorably and courageously.  They deserve from us, at least, an element of due process.  They deserve their day in court, rather than being stripped of their constitutional rights in nothing but a “trial by shrink.”

ACTION:  Your Senator is on the NDAA conference committee.  Click here to them the pre-written message.  Tell them to either:

* Delete the House language which would allow commanders or military psychiatrists to question servicemen about gun ownership; or

* Adopt the Burr language which would prohibit them from sending the names of these servicemen to the NICS system and permanently taking away their Second Amendment rights.

 TAKI'S
VERBATIM

Burly-and-bearded country singer Trace Adkins ruffled all the usual feathers and bruised all the usual feelings when he dared to wear a Confederate battle flag earpiece in full view of gasping national TV viewers while singing “The Christmas Song” in the Yankee stronghold of Rockefeller Center on November 28.

Adkins, who belches out such venerable neo-country chestnuts as “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and “Brown Chicken, Brown Cow,” was subjected to the predictably rage-stroking vilification that comes whenever anyone suggests that the American South has ever been anything beyond a rancid cultural cesspool of lynching, incest, bestiality, racism, toothlessness, retardation, and yes, racism, even though I said it twice.

But Adkins has survived numerous disfiguring accidents in his lifetime, including a near-fatal shooting at the hands of an ex-wife, so he weathered the controversy good-naturedly and with only the slightest wisp of an apology. He is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and has repeatedly referred to what is known as America’s “Civil War” as the “War of Northern Aggression,” although I’ve always preferred Granny Clampett’s explanation that the conflict resulted “when the North invaded America.”

Even though it’s estimated that every third Southern household lost a family member in that war, critics insisted that Adkins and his ilk should “get over” the Civil War and quit being all butt-hurt because they lost, though I doubt the same people ever dare encourage American blacks to “get over” slavery.

They’d also likely never encourage Steven Spielberg to “get over” the Civil War, nor to cease peddling the Christlike mythology that has emerged around its chief perpetrator, Abraham Lincoln.

Instead, such obviously unbiased propaganda machines such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Washington Post insist that it is only the “Neo-Confederates” and those who pathetically cling to romantic notions of the South’s “Lost Cause” who “whitewash” history and peddle myths, distortions, falsehoods, half-truths, and rationalizations because they are secretly wracked with guilt due to the fact that they are disgustingly racist and racistly disgusting subhuman sore losers who are ready to explode with vile and smelly racism at any given moment.

“I’m here to smash your myths and smear feces on your whitewashing.”
After all, it is only “racists” who are pushing an agenda, and never the victors in war. It’s not as if the winners write the history books, so kindly zap any such thoughts from your mind. And it’s not as if white male Southerners have served as “America’s niggers” since at least the 1960s or that the American South has played the role of America’s Guilt Spittoon for longer than that.

The American psyche has increasingly become driven by feminine emotion rather than masculine logic. Comforted snugly inside their fake moral cocoons, most Americans are therefore more likely to view history through the prism of guilt-projection and shaming rather than the pragmatic notion that history is essentially a power struggle over land and resources. Almost all individuals and societies appear able to function only when they can project their guilt onto others.

Well, two can play at that game.

Since guilt appears to be the only thing that works with them, I’ll stoop to their tactics and toss a huge steamin’ load of guilt right back in their smirking faces. I’ll take that Hot Guilt Potato and throw it right back at you. I’m here to smash your myths and smear feces on your whitewashing.

Here are some things you’re not likely to see on American TV or read in American textbooks.

FACT: ABRAHAM LINCOLN SAID HE WAS MORE CONCERNED WITH PRESERVING THE UNION THAN WITH ENDING SLAVERY

The transcendently homely president, a wealthy railroad lawyer and willing tool of Northern industrialists, started a war that cost the lives of at least 600,000 white soldiers and 50,000 white civilians. To put that in perspective, that’s at least 130 white corpses for every black cadaver that was lynched throughout American history.

For anyone who insists that the Civil War was about slavery and slavery alone, I force you to chew on Lincoln’s own words:

Much as I hate slavery, I would consent to the extension of it rather than see the Union dissolved, just as I would consent to any GREAT evil, to avoid a GREATER one. (Peoria, 1854)
I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so. (Inaugural Address, March, 1861)
My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy slavery. (From an 1862 letter to Horace Greeley, written during the Civil War)
FACT: LINCOLN WASN’T TOO KEEN ON NEGROES

By suspending habeas corpus, jailing his critics, and tolerating Union soldiers’ rape of Southern women both black and white, Lincoln gave modern progressives several reasons to further bash Republicans, but they’ve shown a strange reticence to do so in his case. They also fail to dogpile on his many public utterances that are far beyond anything that allegedly “racist” modern Republicans say:
What I would most desire would be the separation of the white and black races. (Speech at Springfield, IL, July 17, 1858)
I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races [applause]; that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality….I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race…I will to the very last stand by the law of this State, which forbids the marrying of white people with Negroes.” (The Lincoln-Douglas debates, Charleston, IL, September 18, 1858)
There is a natural disgust in the minds of nearly all white people, to the idea of an indiscriminate amalgamation of the white and black races….A separation of the races is the only perfect preventive of amalgamation….Such separation, if ever affected at all, must be affected by colonization….I am not in favor of Negro citizenship…. (The Lincoln-Douglas debates, Springfield, IL, June 22, 1857)
FACT: UNION GENERAL WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN WASN’T TOO KEEN ON NEGROES AND OTHER NONWHITES, EITHER
I profess…to fight for but one single purpose, viz, to sustain a Government capable of vindicating its just and rightful authority, independent of niggers, cotton, money, or any earthly interest. (Letter of October 10, 18
We must act with vindictive earnestness against the Sioux, even to the extermination, men, women and children….The more Indians we can kill this year, the less will have to be killed next year….They all have to be killed or be maintained as a species of paupers. (Quoted in “Citizen Sherman” by Michael Fellman)
You should also sweep from your mind the fact that apart from heavy English involvement, the international slave trade to America was almost entirely managed by wealthy, slave-ship-owning Yankees rather than those evil Southern rednecks.
Also ignore the fact that Frederick Douglass said that “many colored men” fought for the South as “real soldiers.”

Don’t think about the fact that many so-called “Native Americans” owned black slaves and also fought for the Confederacy.

And don’t ponder for a second that if extorting a slave’s labor is wrong, extorting a taxpayer’s labor might be wrong as well.

And don’t dare to wonder why, if all of America’s wealth and power was indeed built on slavery, how in the hell did the North manage to win?

The lesson they’re ramming down our throats is that one is never permitted to question the sanctity of whatever war led to the current state of affairs. This is why you can’t “revise” World War II or the Civil War. It wasn’t that the victors were better killers—it’s because their cause was just. You can commit all manner of barbarity so long as it’s for a “good” cause.

Bob Munden, known perhaps equally as a fierce Fast-Draw competitor who was recognized by Guinness World Records as The Fastest Man with a Gun Who Ever Lived, as an exhibition shooter of the highest order with all kinds of firearms; an entertainer as well as a master gun smith who developed groundbreaking methods of customizing to perfection the beloved .45 caliber single action revolver and other guns, died Monday of heart failure.

Munden’s wife and performance partner Becky said Tuesday she was driving home with Bob after treatment at a Missoula hospital for what doctors described as a mild heart attack. At some point between Missoula and their home of Butte, Bob mentioned he was experiencing chest pains, told Becky to keep on driving, and died.

The 70-year-old shooting sports superstar was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. James Heathcare in Butte.

Born February 8, 1942 in Kansas City, Mo, Bob began his professional shooting career at age 11 in Big Bear Lake, Calif. While still in high school, Bob placed 2nd in a competition known as the Leatherslap. After years of competing in Fast Draw, Bob and Becky performed together beginning in 1968, emphasizing the importance of gun safety when they went on tour in 1969 for the National School Assembly Program. Depending on the venue, Bob and Becky continued to perform together shooting blanks or with live ammunition across the United States, in New Zealand and London, England. As recently as 2011 the Mundens put on their live-ammunition exhibition at locations in California and Kansas.

Over the years Bob, often with Becky who is also a champion shooter, appeared on many television shows, most famously American Shooter, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Shooting USA, and Shooting USA’s Impossible Shots. Munden can be found all over YouTube and appears in entertaining and instructional DVDs including Bob Munden: Outrageous Shooting and Bob Munden: The Collector’s Edition.

At age 68 Munden appeared on Stan Lee’s Superhumans on the History Channel. The episode shows a scientist reporting that Munden’s hand withstands 10 Gs of force when he draws and fires his gun from the holster. Viewers learn that as a comparison, jet pilots are trained to withstand 9 Gs, and that Bob is “faster than a rattlesnake.” In a demo during the same show, Munden draws and shoots two balloons six feet apart with two shots that sound virtually like one.

Just eight weeks ago today, at the Butte Gun Club range for Midland Radio Corporation, Munden did exhibition shooting with a .45 caliber single action and Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol. Bob Munden & Midland XTC High Definition Action Camera – YouTube

Registered as members #118 and #119 respectively, Bob and Becky entertained at the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) End of Trail World Championships of Cowboy Action Shooting 30 times with what Becky proudly said was the most complex presentation ever offered at an exhibition shooting show. She added that Bob was Cowboy Action Shooting’s first gunsmith.

Becky said, “We had an incredible, memorable life together.”

She also said that of all the in-arguably amazing shots Bob achieved during his lifetime of speed shooting, precision shooting and showmanship with handguns, rifles and shotguns; his opening a safety pin, hitting a target 600 yards away, throwing a knife with a bullet and others all accomplished with handguns and practiced mostly in his imagination rather than at the range, Bob was definite that splitting a playing card in he threw into the air was most difficult.

Bob is survived by his wife Becky, his daughters Natalie and Mitzi; grandson Levi, granddaughter Kaycee, his mother; three brothers and a sister; nieces, nephews, friends and millions of fans.

According to Bob’s wishes his remains will be cremated. A memorial and celebration of life is to be scheduled during warmer weather in 2013. A small event for local neighbors and friends will take place in Butte in the near future. Information about both events will be posted here and at the official Facebook Fan Page.

PULL DOWN THE WHITE FLAG OF SURRENDER

Via midnightrider

A textual message for Republicans, Mugwumps, and sundry others:

Man gives every reason for his conduct save one, every excuse for his crimes save one, every plea for his safety save one; and that one is his cowardice.
--George Bernard Shaw

SUBDUE THE YELLOW STREAK

It’s time for Republicans – way past time! – to run down the white flag of surrender to that round headed banana republic style dictator and tell him to put his meager 2.8 election landslide where the Sun doesn’t strike it. Enough is enough; Republicans must remember that a total fool is unredeemable and undeserving of any respect - office or no office.

Mr. Boehner, get off of your knees and quit genuflecting to this foreign Kenyan two-bit potentate. Pull your troops together and pass a full across the board extension of the Bush tax cuts and dare this interloping nitwit, or his like-minded Liberal/Progressives in the Senate, to veto it. If they do so it will be at their peril…nothing wrong with playing their game they chose the rules so use their rules. In short, “Put the turd on their plates”

180 Economists Call for Obama to Back Off Tax Hikes

VERBATIM

A letter to Congress from the National Taxpayers Union, signed by 180 economists, urges members to refrain from approving any tax increases.

President Barack Obama is demanding a tax hike on the wealthy as part of a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff of automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to begin Jan. 1. Some Republican congressmen have expressed a willingness to accept that.

“Increasing taxes would likely slow or reverse our nation's fragile economic recovery and undermine long-term growth,” the letter says. It recommends spending cuts instead. That “would help stabilize the government's fiscal imbalance and create a more conducive environment for robust expansion.”

Signers of the letter include Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Congressional Budget Office director under President George W. Bush, and Jim Miller, White House budget director under President Ronald Reagan.

“In particular, Congress should avoid raising marginal tax rates on income and taxes on investment, such as capital gains and dividends taxes,” the economists state. “These types of taxes most directly and meaningfully affect job creation.”

The experts also oppose cutting itemized deductions for the wealthy and raising taxes on a particular industry, like energy for example. “Such policies are merely revenue-raising ploys when executed outside the context of comprehensive tax reform that includes correspondingly lower marginal rates,” the letter reads.

Boehner: Can we just be honest about this? We’re broke.

On the House floor on Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner broke from the mutual semi-silence of what’s been going on between himself and President Obama on the fiscal-cliff negotiations, and informed the Congress that all he’s waiting on are some proposals for spending cuts from the White House on which they would be willing to make moves as part of the “balanced approach” we’ve heard so much about (emphasis mine):
The Republicans made a serious offer to avert the fiscal cliff… Let’s be honest, we’re broke. And the plan that we’ve offered is consistent with the president’s call for a balanced approach. A lot of people know that the president and I met on Sunday. It was a nice meeting, it was cordial. But we’re still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the balanced approach that he promised the American people. You know, where are the president’s spending cuts? The longer the White House slow walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff. … We know that the president wants more stimulus spending and an increase in the debt limit without any cuts or reforms. That’s not fixing the problem, frankly, it’s making it worse. On top of that, the president wants to raise tax rates on many small business owners. Now, even if we did exactly what the president wants, we would see red ink for as far as the eye can see. That’s not fixing the problem either, it’s making it worse and hurting our economy.
This is a point about which I don’t think Republicans are being nearly vocal enough: President Obama’s plan is nowhere near the realm of seriousness. He may have the bigger platform from which to trumpet the ostensible benefits of his plan, but the cold, hard reality is that he’s proposing a whole heap of new spending, and merely hiking taxes on the wealthy will do perilously close to nothing to help us bring down our deficit gap. Observe: Even if the president’s proposal works perfectly and brings in the amount of revenue the White House claims it will (I wouldn’t bet on it), a full three-quarters of these tax hikes would go toward new spending. Balanced approach, say what?

The Day General Grant Expelled the Jews

Via SHNV

In less than one week, no one will be publicly celebrating the sesquicentennial of one of the oddest events in American history: General Grant's expulsion of the Jews from his military district on December 17, 1862.

Jonathan D. Sarna, who teaches history at Brandeis University, has written a book on this event, one which gets no space in high school and college textbooks on American history: When General Grant Expelled the Jews (2012).

In the weeks prior to Lincoln's issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which emancipated no slaves, General Grant grew weary of Jews who violated the government's price controls on cotton. He wrote a letter to C. P. Wolcott, the Assistant Secretary of War, dated December 17, 1862.
I have long since believed that in spite of all the vigilance that can be infused into Post Commanders, that the Specie regulations of the Treasury Dept. have been violated, and that mostly by Jews and other unprincipled traders. So well satisfied of this have I been at this that I instructed the Commdg Officer at Columbus [Kentucky] to refuse all permits to Jews to come south, and frequently have had them expelled from the Dept. [of the Tennessee]. But they come in with their Carpet sacks in spite of all that can be done to prevent it. The Jews seem to be a privileged class that can travel any where. They will land at any wood yard or landing on the river and make their way through the country. If not permitted to buy Cotton themselves they will act as agents for someone else who will be at a Military post, with a Treasury permit to receive Cotton and pay for it in Treasury notes which the Jew will buy up at an agreed rate, paying gold.
There is but one way that I know of to reach this case. That is for Government to buy all the Cotton at a fixed rate and send it to Cairo, St Louis, or some other point to be sold. Then all traders, they are a curse to the Army, might be expelled..
I mean, what can you expect from people who had decided that fiat money issued by Congress – greenbacks – was not as good as gold? Just because the greenbacks traded at a discount to gold's price was not proof that they were not as good as gold. No, sir. It was the fault of "unprincipled traders," who in some way – no one is quite sure – colluded with one another, thereby driving the price of greenbacks down.

These people refused to let the government buy cotton at a fixed price. They bid up the price and bought it out from under the military. Can you imagine anyone doing such a thing?

So, Grant decided to nip this in the bud.

"Damned from Memory": When the Drug War Turns on its Own

Via Horace

John McLaughlin, known to his friends as “Sparky,” was a True Believer in the War on Drugs. He was convinced that his work as an agent of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement (BNI) was protecting innocent people from opportunists and thugs who prey on the weak.

He eventually came to the sorrowful realization that the most ruthless elements involved in the drug trade aren’t found in Latin America or blighted urban neighborhoods, but in well-appointed offices in Washington, D.C. and Langley, Virginia. McLaughlin also came to understand, from first-hand experience, that the Drug War has created an all-encompassing police state that targets not only the innocent public, but also law enforcement officers who become irritants to government-protected criminal cliques.

McLaughlin and three of his colleagues, working with the Drug Enforcement Administration, identified an east coast drug syndicate that was selling heroin and using the proceeds to fund a U.S.-supported political campaign in the Dominican Republic.

The syndicate was operated by leaders and activists in the Dominican Revolutionary Party (DRP) on behalf of its standard-bearer, Jose Francisco Pena-Gomez, who – according to a January 17, 1996 CIA memo obtained by McLaughlin – was the Clinton administration’s choice to occupy the National Palace in Santo Domingo. (Pena-Gomez, as it happens, lost the election.)

After McLaughlin’s squad learned that several suspects were to deliver $550,000 in drug proceeds at a March 28, 1996 DRP fundraiser in Manhattan, they contacted the DEA and arranged a sting operation intended to bring about several high-profile arrests, including that of Pena-Gomez himself.

At the last minute, the operation inexplicably fell apart. Pena-Gomez, who received a conveniently timed anonymous death threat, was taken into custody by the NYPD and spirited back to the Dominican Republic. At least some of the drug proceeds were given to then-Vice President Al Gore at a DNC fundraiser in Coogan’s Irish Pub in New York City’s Washington Heights.

McLaughlin points out that just prior to the sting operation, he had refused a demand from a CIA agent named Victoria Baylor that he provide the names of confidential informants within the Dominican drug network.

“Someone from Washington stepped in and crushed our attempt to seize over $550,000 in proceeds from narcotics sales laundered as fundraising for a third-world political campaign,” writes McLaughlin in his newly published memoir Damned from Memory. “Further, several dozen law enforcement officers stood by on orders from the DEA Sensitive Activities Committee or some other nameless D.C. entity as these funds illegally left our country. No one was touching Pena-Gomez or his entourage.”
