An Angry Little Dog

=========

As is typical, the Patriot/Liberty movement is divided. Like a pie cut into three pieces, there are hard lines marking the division of each piece, wholly separate and lifted out of the tin at any moment.

In viewing the upcoming election there are three distinct views: elect Obama again and get the ball rolling toward a reset; elect Romney and gain a little more time to make preparations and organize a resistance; or vote for an independent (most often Gary Johnson) and avoid the "lesser of two evils" vote so many of us detest.

The action part of the movement is divided into three separate divisions: hunker down and make preparations to survive the economic or political cataclysm that is inevitable; take the fight to Washington right now; or continue to work politically to find the right candidate and back them to the hilt.

The economic side is equally divided: get out of the system entirely, or as much as possible; drain the beast by obtaining as many government hand-outs as possible driving it close to insolvency and thereby expediting the collapse; or continue on as usual making preparations and buying precious metals as often as possible as insurance against the economic collapse.

I could agree with any and all of the above options. The point is not the method, it is the outcome, but it is all marred by where the movement currently stands: we are divided. As liberty-minded people we seek individuality, have our own thoughts and act by our own conscience. This makes us a very unwieldy group, one almost incapable of action because once a person steps out and says: "This is the way to go" there is as much resistance from within as from without.

Society in general is lagging behind our own steps, slow to arrive at a point of action, avoiding conflict wherever possible and some dependent upon the very system they now detest.

Homeland Security graduates first Corps of Homeland Youth

Via Knuckledraggin' My Life Away

The federal government calls them FEMA Corps. But they conjure up memories of the Hitler Youth of 1930’s Germany. Regardless of their name, the Dept of Homeland Security has just graduated its first class of 231 Homeland Youth. Kids, aged 18-24 and recruited from the President’s AmeriCorp volunteers, they represent the first wave of DHS’s youth corps, designed specifically to create a full time, paid, standing army of FEMA Youth across the country.

On September 13, 2012, the Department of Homeland Security graduated its first class of FEMA Corps first-responders. While the idea of having a volunteer force of tens of thousands of volunteers scattered across the country to aid in times of natural disasters sounds great, the details and timing of this new government army is somewhat curious, if not disturbing.

Instilling Lessons of Hatred and Hostility

As related by Dr. Clyde Wilson, the Republican party was solely responsible for carrying out the bloodiest war in American history against the American South, in order to destroy self-government. In South Carolina, a Republican-rigged postwar convention erected a corrupt political regime kept in power by Northern bayonets, carpetbaggers and newly-enfranchised freedmen.

North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission

"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"

Instilling Lessons of Hatred and Hostility:

“When the war came to an end, and the Southern States lay prostrate at the feet of their conqueror, they experienced the bitterest consequences of the humiliation of defeat. There were no revengeful prosecutions (a few judicial murders in the flush of the victory excepted). The Congress devoted itself to the work of reconstruction….on the principle of equal rights to all men….there seemed to be no reason why the States should not proceed harmoniously in the career of peaceful progress.

But there was an element in the population which rendered such a principle fatal to all peaceful progress. In many of the States, and in South Carolina particularly, a majority of the people had been slaves. All these were suddenly elevated to the rank of citizens. Were this all, even then there might have been hope.

The slaves had always lived well with their masters, bore no resentment for past injuries, and if they were let alone in their own mutual relations, the two races might, and doubtless would have harmonized and soon discovered the art of living together in peace. But this was no to be.

With the progress of Northern arms grew up an institution founded ostensibly, perhaps really, for the protection of the rights of the newly emancipated slaves. This institution, known as the Freedmen’s Bureau, became for the time the ruling power in the State. It interfered in all the concerns of whites and blacks, its officers were generally men who not only had no love for the South, but who made it their mission to foster in the minds of the blacks a bitter hatred and mistrust of the whites.

They were, on all occasions, the champions of the Negroes rights, and never failed to instruct them that it was to the Republicans that they were indebted for all the rights which they enjoyed. In the train of the Bureau came the schoolmistresses who instilled into the minds of their pupils the same lessons of hatred and hostility.

The consequence was, that though the personal relations between the races were friendly, though the blacks invariably addressed themselves to the whites as to true friends for all offices of love and kindness, of which they stood in need, they would never listen to them, if the latter wished to talk about politics.

This feeling was intensified by the introduction of the Union League, a secret society, the members of which were solemnly bound never to vote for any but a Republican. By such means, the Negro presented a solid phalanx of Radicalism….a new business arose and prospered in Columbia, a sort of political brokerage by which men contracted with speculators to buy the votes of members when they were interested in the passage of any measure. Here was a corruptible Legislature under the influence of men utterly corrupt.

In South Carolina….Society was divided into the conquered whites, who were destined to satisfy the voracious appetites of the carpetbagger, and the needy and ignorant Negro, directed by his hungry teachers. The whites had no rights which they were bound to respect; if they paid the enormous taxes which were levied upon him, the Negro was satisfied; he had done all that it was necessary for him to do in the degenerate State.”

Welfare Spending Soars 32% Under Obama

Welfare spending has grown substantially over the past four years, reaching $746 billion in 2011 — or more than Social Security, basic defense spending or any other single chunk of the federal government — according to a new memo by the Congressional Research Service.

The steady rise in welfare spending, which covers more than 80 programs primarily designed to help low-income Americans, got a big boost from the 2009 stimulus and has grown, albeit somewhat more slowly, in 2010 and 2011. One reason is that more people are qualifying in the weak economy, but the federal government also has broadened eligibility so that more people qualify for programs.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, who requested the Congressional Research Service report, said it underscores a fundamental shift in welfare, moving away from a Band-Aid and toward a more permanent crutch.

“No longer should we measure compassion by how much money the government spends but by how many people we help to rise out of poverty,” the Alabama conservative said. “Welfare assistance should be seen as temporary whenever possible and the goal must be to help more of our fellow citizens attain gainful employment and financial independence.”

Overall, welfare spending as measured by obligations has grown from $563 billion in fiscal 2008 to $746 billion in fiscal 2011, or a jump of 32 percent.

GOA's Voter Guide Out

The 2012 elections have now entered the homestretch. The candidate debates are ramping up, and politicians all over the country are blanketing the airwaves with lies about their legislative records.

It’s not a new problem. Remember the now-infamous quote from presidential hopeful John Kerry about the Iraq War: “I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it.”

Rarely has a politician exposed himself more shamefully than the Massachusetts Democrat did back in 2003. With that single quote, Senator John Kerry gave the Bush reelection team an incredible gem as he pigeon-holed himself as the ultimate, flip-flopping politician.

Of course, everyone knows that most politicians do what Kerry did -- they are just a lot better in disguising their duplicity.

And for that reason, Gun Owners of America has just posted its biannual Candidate Rating -- something the organization has done for more than two decades -- to help gun owners ferret out those lying politicians who “voted for your gun rights before they voted against them.”

Take a recent issue. At the urging of GOA, members asked their U.S. Senators to support “constitutional carry” legislation in the Congress which will allow gun owners to carry their guns throughout the country (in many cases without a permit).

Politicians love to hide their views when responding to these kinds of requests, and they will use a plethora of techniques to conceal their real agenda. One technique is to simply lie and make themselves appear like they agree with the gun owner.

Consider a recent letter from Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri to a GOA activist who is a constituent in her state. Asked whether she would support this pro-gun legislation to allow gun owners to carry their guns across the country, McCaskill said:

“I strongly support legal and safe gun ownership by law-abiding citizens and have consistently voted to uphold this constitutional right.

“For example, in the 111th Congress, I voted to permit gun owners to carry firearms in their checked bags when traveling on Amtrak trains and to require the National Park Service to honor state gun laws when gun owners enter National Parks in their states.

“I am pleased that both of these common sense provisions, which enhance the ability of sportsmen to enjoy activities like hunting, have become law. Please know that I will continue to support the right of law-abiding citizens to safely own firearms.”

McCaskill’s quote is filled with so many whoppers, it could supply all of the Burger King customers in her state for an entire month.

There is not enough room to deal with all of them here, so let’s just take her claim that she supported repealing the Amtrak and National Parks gun bans.

Did Claire McCaskill really vote to repeal two gun bans in the previous Congress? Hardly. You see, this is where McCaskill -- who is F-rated by GOA -- pulls a “John Kerry,” essentially saying: “I supported gun rights before I opposed it.”

When these two pro-gun provisions came before her as stand-alone amendments, McCaskill opposed them. For example, she voted against the amendment to repeal the National Parks gun ban which was added to a credit card “reform” bill. (Senate Roll Call #188, May 12, 2009.)

Later on, she supported the underlying credit card bill so, presumably, Sen. McCaskill must think this allows her to say she helped repeal the National Parks gun ban -- even though she voted against it when it was a stand-alone amendment.

In other words, she supported the National Parks gun ban before she “opposed” it.

Sen. McCaskill also voted against the amendment to repeal the Amtrak gun ban on her first opportunity. (Senate Roll Call #145, April 2, 2009.)

How then can she claim she supported repealing the ban on Amtrak trains? Well, this is where it gets tricky. After the first amendment never made it to the President’s desk, the leader of this repeal effort, Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, offered this amendment to yet another bill.

McCaskill did vote in favor of that amendment, but then she later voted against the underlying bill -- essentially trying to kill the repeal effort.

This means that McCaskill voted against the gun ban repeal … before she voted in favor of it … before she voted against it. Did you follow all that?

Considering politicians’ tendency to obfuscate, how is a gun owner to know where his member of Congress really stands on the Second Amendment? To be honest, it’s a full-time job tracking down the voting records of all the candidates.

And this is why Gun Owners of America surveys all the candidates for Congress. It’s why we rate Congressmen, not on what they say, but on how they vote. It’s why we try to put a Candidate Rating into as many gun owners’ hands as we can prior to the election.

So if you want the most complete Congressional Candidate Rating that scores Second Amendment issues, click here to see it.

Print it out. Copy it. Distribute it around. Email it to all your pro-gun family and friends.

GOA is committed to helping millions of gun owners around the country make informed choices when they go to the polls this fall. Because when it comes to our Second Amendment rights, you can’t just go on what the politicians are telling you!

Slavery in the US Northern States

Via Billy

As a northern Yankee, could your ancestors have been slavers? Best to be certain you're not just another stone thrower living in a glass house.

INTRODUCTION
African slavery is so much the outstanding feature of the South, in the unthinking view of it, that people often forget there had been slaves in all the old colonies.

Slaves were auctioned openly in the Market House of Philadelphia; in the shadow of Congregational churches in Rhode Island; in Boston taverns and warehouses; and weekly, sometimes daily, in Merchant's Coffee House of New York. Such Northern heroes of the American Revolution as John Hancock and Benjamin Franklin bought, sold, and owned black people. William Henry Seward, Lincoln's anti-slavery Secretary of State during the Civil War, born in 1801, grew up in Orange County, New York, in a slave-owning family and amid neighbors who owned slaves if they could afford them. The family of Abraham Lincoln himself, when it lived in Pennsylvania in colonial times, owned slaves.[1]

When the minutemen marched off to face the redcoats at Lexington in 1775, the wives, boys and old men they left behind in Framingham took up axes, clubs, and pitchforks and barred themselves in their homes because of a widespread, and widely credited, rumor that the local slaves planned to rise up and massacre the white inhabitants while the militia was away.[2]

African bondage in the colonies north of the Mason-Dixon Line has left a legacy in the economics of modern America and in the racial attitudes of the U.S. working class. Yet comparatively little is written about the 200-year history of Northern slavery. Robert Steinfeld's deservedly praised "The Invention of Free Labor" (1991) states, "By 1804 slavery had been abolished throughout New England," ignoring the 1800 census, which shows 1,488 slaves in New England. Recent archaeological discoveries of slave quarters or cemeteries in Philadelphia and New York City sometimes are written up in newspaper headlines as though they were exhibits of evidence in a case not yet settled (cf. “African Burial Ground Proves Northern Slavery,” The City Sun, Feb. 24, 1993).

I had written one book on Pennsylvania history and was starting a second before I learned that William Penn had been a slaveowner.

Priceless!:) Who Won "Last Night's" Debate?

Everything is rigged - health, politics, finance and more - but here's how to beat the system

Via Wes

I've been pondering this topic for weeks, trying to find the words to communicate the full impact of this realization to which we are all increasingly awakening. Everything is rigged... the stock market, the news, the food, your taxes, public schools, the health care system, and on and on. Even Lance Armstrong's cycling victories were all apparently rigged (with doping), we're now finding out.

But what do I mean by "rigged" specifically? All these systems and industries are rigged to cheat you, to suppress you, and ultimately to suppress your human potential.

Think about it. The sick-care system is intentionally engineered to give you cancer, keep you sick, and keep you locked into a medical system that enriches powerful corporations while sacrificing human life.

The financial system is rigged to quietly steal the value of your money through endless monetary creation also known as "quantitative easing." The more money the Fed prints, the less valuable the money you worked so hard to earn is left remaining.

The political system is utterly rigged to give you the illusion of choice while parading in front of you two puppets of different skin colors who both serve the same masters (the banksters).

The food system is rigged with GMOs that actually poison you while spreading genetic pollution across farms and fields everywhere.

The news is utterly and comprehensively rigged, and this was highlighted yet again by former CNN star reporter Amber Lyon who just went public with scathing accusations about how CNN allowed foreign terror regimes to actually BUY positive coverage on CNN's broadcasts! This story is absolutely astonishing, and the very best interview of Amber Lyon exposing all this was conducted by Alex Jones and is found on YouTube.com. (Must-see video.) See Amber Lyon's website at: http://www.amberlyonlive.com

The justice system is ridiculously rigged. A woman was arrested a few weeks ago and charged with a felony crime for drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. Meanwhile, absolute evil-minded criminals like Jon Corzine and Eric Holder go free with no prosecution whatsoever. The criminals run free while the innocent are persecuted.

"Science" is largely rigged. Science journals are all dominated by Big Pharma advertising money, and nearly all the so-called science you see in the news anymore is just a regurgitation of fabricated research from corporate science whores who have sold their integrity for a paycheck. Much of the effort behind "science" today is spent reinforcing a monopoly over medicine by pushing deadly vaccines while disparaging healing plants and nutrients.

Government regulators are completely rigged. The FDA looks out primarily for the interests of Monsanto and drug companies, not the safety of the American people. The USDA is completely beholden to the biotech industry and the meat factory giants, routinely betraying Americans with its decisions.

Private property is rigged. Thanks to unconstitutional property taxes, you never really "own" your land. Instead, you lease it from the government. Don't believe me? Try not paying property taxes and see what happens. Your property will soon be seized at gunpoint and taken over by the government.

Even WAR is completely rigged. Wars are started with false flag attacks engineered by the imperialist USA, then all the reporting on war is completely censored to shield the American public from the truth of how horrifying it really is. The entire experience of war is sanitized, processed, homogenized... just like the processed cow's milk you're (hopefully not) drinking.

How do you beat a rigged system? Don't play!

MUSLIMS ATTACK CHRISTIANS IN AMERICA OVER SHARIA LAW IN MICHIGAN

CHRISTIANS WIN BIG LAWSUIT AGAINST MUSLIM THUGS IN DEARBORN, MICHIGAN

A Detroit judge has awarded over $100,000 in attorney's fees in the case of a Christian, George Saieg, who was attacked and arrested at the festival.

"This case is a stunning example of the pernicious influence of stealth jihad and Shariah law in America. The city of Dearborn is now a serial violator of Christians' constitutional rights and has wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees and costs defending its insidious conduct. Apparently, in Dearborn, where Shariah and jihad is advocated openly, it is a crime to preach the Christian gospel. AFLC is committed to stopping this attack on our Constitution. And the ruling today allows us to do just that," said Yerushalmi, an AFLC attorney.

A federal judge in Michigan has decided to allow a civil-rights claim against the city of Dearborn by four Christians arrested at the city's Arab festival to move forward.

In that case, the city was told to pay the fees on behalf of Christian Pastor George Saieg, who had been arrested at the 2009 event. Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen said his recommendation was for fees and costs totaling $103,401.96 to be awarded in the case that was handled by attorney Robert J. Muise.

The American Freedom Law Center said the four Christians were arrested by Dearborn police officers while speaking about their faith to Muslims.

The Christians spent the night in jail and were accused of "breaching the peace." However, Muise won acquittals from a jury for all the defendants in a criminal trial.

After the trial, Muise, along with Yerushalmi, filed a 96-page civil rights lawsuit against the city, Mayor John B. O'Reilly, Chief of Police Ronald Haddad, 17 police officers and two executives from the American Arab Chamber of Commerce. The plaintiffs are Acts 17 Apologetics, Nabeel Qureshi, David Wood, Paul Rezkalla and Josh Hogg.

"The judge's ruling today is a huge victory for these Christians," Muise said. "It allows the civil rights claims for the most egregious constitutional violations to proceed against the city and its officials. AFLC is committed to ensuring that our Constitution and not Shariah law, which makes it a crime to preach the Gospel to Muslims, is the supreme law in this country."

The city had argued that festival worker Roger Williams' complaint to police about the Christians gave officers a reason to arrest them.

Muise and Yerushalmi, on behalf of the Christians, argued the ruling does not preclude the civil rights claims because it was based upon fabricated allegations, and the Christians did not have a full and fair opportunity to challenge the claims in the police reports prior to the ruling.

The federal judge agreed with the AFLC attorneys.

U.S. District Court Judge Stephen J. Murphy III stated, "It is a reasonable inference from their allegations that [city officials] knew Williams' complaint was pretextual."

The federal judge noted that "[t]he indirect evidence of this conspiracy that was developed in state court and is already a part of the record in this case -- including the videos and the testimony given by [city police officers] at their trial -- elevates [the Christians'] accusations above the threshold of plausibility. "

The federal judge also said, "The [state] district judge appears to have presumed the police reports submitted were truthful, and staked his probable cause determination on that presumption. Plaintiffs had no opportunity to either cross-examine the officers or take the stand themselves to contest the reports."

And he ruled, "Finally, the district court was inattentive to the effect plaintiffs' claims of First Amendment protection might have on the probable cause determination. . . . The Sixth Circuit has warned on previous occasions that Michigan's 'breach of peace' statute is prone to such abuse."

And the ruling today allows us to do just that," said Yerushalmi.

Oppose the Consideration of Treaties in the Lame-duck Session

Thirty-seven senators have pledged, in a letter circulated by Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and addressed to Majority and Minority leaders Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), to “oppose efforts to consider a treaty during” the lame-duck session. Click on the image at left to download a PDF of this letter and its 37 signatures.

Because treaties require a two-thirds majority in the Senate to be ratified, this group of 37 senators will be able to block any treaties introduced on the floor of the Senate in this year’s lame-duck session. Two treaties that are likely to be considered after the November 6 elections are the UN Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities. The currently stalled UN Arms Trade Treaty could even be resuscitated in time for consideration in November or December. You can learn why we need to oppose these UN treaties by clicking on the names of these treaties earlier in this paragraph.

Although these 37 senators will be sufficient to block the ratification of any treaty during the lame-duck session (a minimum of 34 are required to block treaties), tremendous forces can be brought into play by establishment elites to change votes. Therefore, please contact your senators and urge them to block the consideration of any and all treaties in the lame-duck session. Something as important as treaty ratification should not be undertaken by a lame-duck senate with many retired and defeated senators casting votes.

Thanks.

Who Originated the Term “Racist” And Why?

Via Carl

We have all heard the term “Racist” often more than we care to. It seems as if the politically correct draw the word like a pistol every time they want to verbally mow someone down. Unfortunately it often works and the person who has been labeled a racist or guilty of “white racism” (it’s always white racism, never racism of any other color) slinks off into a corner somewhere and remains silent from then on out, which was the reason for using the term to begin with. It silences dissent.

In an article on http://patdollard.com  published in 2010 the origin of the word is dealt with. The article observes: “The word ‘racist’ has for a long time been the single most effective fear-word in the leftist and neoconservative arsenal. For decades they have successfully used it in the political arena to slander traditionalists, shut down debate, and leave opponents running for cover…What surprisingly remains almost totally undisclosed, even on the hard core traditionalist Right, is the word’s origin. Did it come from a liberal sociologist? A 60s Marxist college professor? Perhaps a politician in the Democratic Party? No, it turns out that the word was invented by none other than one of the principal architects of the 74-year Soviet nightmare, the founder and first leader of the infamous Red Army, Leon Trotsky.”

The article notes Leon Trotsky’s 1930 work, The History of the Russian Revolution  and it shows a passage from that book. The last word in a particular passage in that book has a Latin transliteration which is “racistov”, i.e., “racists” The article says: “This work here is the first time in history one will ever find that word.”

So, if this article is correct, the originator of the term “racist” is the original Trotskyite.

The Death of Paper: Newsweek to Exit Print in December

Newsweek will cease to be a print publication with its Dec. 31 issue, abandoning the “romance of print” to “embrace the all-digital future.” The withdrawal after 80 years in print leaves the field of in print weekly news magazines to Time.

Tina Brown, editor of the magazine, made the announcement on the website of the Daily Beast, which merged with Newsweek in 2010.

We are announcing this morning an important development at Newsweek and The Daily Beast,” she said in a joint statement with The Newsweek Daily Beast Company CEO Baba Shetty. “Newsweek will transition to an all-digital format in early 2013. As part of this transition, the last print edition in the United States will be our Dec. 31 issue.

“Meanwhile, Newsweek will expand its rapidly growing tablet and online presence, as well as its successful global partnerships and events business.”

The new publication will be named Newsweek Global and will be a single, worldwide paid subscription edition available through e-readers for both tablet and the Web. Some content will also be available on the The Daily Beast site.

Into The Breach

Via safetalker

From left: Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith died in the recent attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Libya.

President Obama implied, quite intentionally, in his Weekly Address that Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods were part of Ambassador Christopher Steven’s security detail:

Glen and Tyrone had each served America as Navy SEALs for many years, before continuing their service providing security for our diplomats in Libya. They died as they lived their lives — defending their fellow Americans, and advancing the values that all of us hold dear.
-President Obama (Weekly address)

Sounds good, the only problem is this statement is a total fabrication. Yes, they were both former Navy Seals, but neither Tyrone nor Glen were part of the Ambassadors official security detail.
No. The truth is: they heard the attack, they heard the gunfire, and despite the danger to themselves they rushed into the breach taking weapons from the frightened Libyan security officials to help protect the American Consulate, Ambassador Stevens and his embassy aide Sean Smith.

Both Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were under no obligation to assist, protect or defend Stevens.
They could have bugged out, they didn’t….. They ran into the breach. It was, and is, an important enough distinction such that two U.S. officials quickly wanted to tell the truth. They told the Guardian:

[...]  they feared the Obama administration’s scant description of the episode left a misimpression that the two ex-Navy SEALs might have been responsible for the ambassador’s personal safety or become separated from him.

“Woods and Doherty weren’t part of the detail, nor were they personally responsible for the ambassador’s security, but they stepped into the breach when the attacks occurred and their actions saved others lives — and they shouldn’t be lumped in with the security detail,”…..
According to what scant actual information is available the former seal team members, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, appear to have been in Libya because they were contracted by another intelligence office, probably the CIA, to track down the missing surface-to-air missiles from the initial rebel uprising.

During the Gadaffi overthrow massive stockpiles of Libyan weapons including MANPADS and other surface to air missiles were looted from the military storage facilities. Estimates put the number of missing missiles around 20,000.

You Should Never Try to Cannonball Into a Frozen Pool — This Viral Vid of a German Guy Shows Why

Via Bill

Going for a polar bear swim is a display of guts, physical will-power and insanity all at the same time. A German gathering up his muster to jump into what appears to be an ice cold pool, while wearing only a Speedo-like swimsuit, is the perfect example of these traits. But he forgot to do one thing — check the water.

In a YouTube video posted in late September that went from only a couple thousand views to more than 2.7 million in less than 24 hours — thanks to it going viral on the site Reddit — the man is first seen staring down his target. With what sounds to be a mix of German and some English, the man seems to allude to the purpose of his jump being to promote his new band.

Making a running leap toward the pool, he lands with a thud instead of a splash. The pool was solid ice.

My Reminiscences of The Civil War: with the Stonewall Brigade and the Immortal 600

Alfred Mallory Edgar was born on July 10, 1837, in Greenbrier County, [West] Virginia, the son of Archer Edgar and Nancy Howe Pearis. Their mill, known as Edgar's Mill, is now the site of present day Ronceverte, West Virginia. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the family owned ten slaves, five males and five females, ranging in age from 7 to 39 years old. On May 9, 1861, at 23 years of age, Alfred volunteered for service in the Greenbrier Rifles, which would become part of the 27th Virginia Infantry, a regiment in the famous Stonewall Brigade of the Confederate Army.

The Stonewall Brigade received their name from their legendary commander, General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. The 27th Virginia fought in many of the major campaigns and battles of the Civil War, including First Manassas, the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the 1864 battles of the Wilderness. Edgar was wounded in the left shoulder at the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on May 12, 1864, and was made a prisoner of war. He was sent to Fort Delaware until he became part of a group that would be known as The Immortal 600. This group of Confederate officers were taken to Morris Island, South Carolina, at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, and exposed to enemy artillery fire for 45 days in an attempt to silence the Confederate gunners manning Fort Sumter.

This was in retaliation for the Confederate Army imprisoning 50 Union Army officers and using them as human shields against federal artillery in the city of Charleston, in an attempt to stop Union artillery from firing upon the city. Edgar was finally released on June 16, 1865. In June, 1875, he married Lydia McNeel, daughter of Col. Paul McNeel, whom he had met while a student at the old Lewisburg Academy. They settled at Hillsboro in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, where he was a farmer and stockman. Captain Edgar died in Pocahontas County on October 8, 1913, and is buried in the McNeel Cemetery. Later in life, he wrote his reminiscences of the war. This work presents those memoirs with only minimal editing. It is the compelling personal account of a young Confederate soldier describing his dramatic experience in the Civil War and its impact on his life, family, and community.

Seth Luther Addresses the Working-Men of New England in 1833

The highly-profitable cotton mills of early-1800s New England were fueled by the slave labor of Southern plantations raising raw cotton. Previously a labor intensive and unprofitable venture, cotton production was turbocharged by New England tinkerer Eli Whitney’s invention.  Add to this the credit extended to Southern planters by Manhattan banks to expand their cotton lands and production to feed the New England mills and their wage-slaves, one understands who exactly perpetuated African slavery in the American South.

Seth Luther Addresses the Working-Men of New England in 1833:

“A [Western] member of the United States Senate seems to be extremely pleased with cotton mills. He says in the Senate, "Who has not been delighted with the clockwork movements of a large cotton manufactory? He had visited them often, and always with increased delight."  And the grand climax [says the western senator] is that at the end of the week, after working like slaves for thirteen or fourteen hours every day, "they enter the temples of God on the Sabbath, and thank him for all his benefits. . . ."  We remark that whatever girls or others may do west of the Allegheny Mountains, we do not believe there can be a single person found east of those mountains who ever thanked God for permission to work in a [New England] cotton mill. . . .

We would respectfully advise the honorable Senator to travel incognito when he visits cotton mills. If he wishes to come at the truth, he must not be known. Let him put on a short jacket and trousers, and join the "lower orders" for a short time. . . . In that case we could show him, in some of the prisons in New England called cotton mills, instead of rosy cheeks, the pale, sickly, haggard countenance of the ragged child--haggard from the worse than slavish confinement in the cotton mill.

He might see that child driven up to the "clockwork" by the cowskin [whip], in some cases. He might see, in some instances, the child taken from his bed at four in the morning, and plunged into cold water to drive away his slumbers and prepare him for the labors of the mill. After all this he might see that child robbed, yes, robbed of a part of his time allowed for meals by moving the hands of the clock backwards, or forwards, as would best accomplish that purpose. . . . He might see in some, and not infrequent, instances, the child, and the female child too, driven up to the "clockwork" with the cowhide, or well-seasoned strap of American manufacture.

We could show him many females who have had corporeal punishment inflicted upon them; one girl eleven years of age who had her leg broken with a billet of wood; another who had a board split over her head by a heartless monster in the shape of an overseer of a cotton mill "paradise."  We shall for want of time….omit entering more largely into detail for the present respecting the cruelties practiced in some of the American mills. Our wish is to show that education is neglected,….because if thirteen hours' actual labor is required each day, it is impossible to attend to education among children, or to improvement among adults.”

[Luther also noted the one-sided nature of labor contracts in the 1830s, the following from Cocheco Manufacturing Company (a textile firm operating in Dover, New Hampshire]

We, the subscribers [the undersigned], do hereby agree to enter the service of the Cocheco Manufacturing Company, and conform, in all respects, to the regulations which are now, or may hereafter be adopted, for the good government of the institution.

We further agree to work for such wages per week, and prices by the job, as the Company may see fit to pay, and be subject to the fines as well as entitled to the premiums paid by the Company.

We further agree to allow two cents each week to be deducted from our wages for the benefit of the sick fund.

We also agree not to leave the service of the Company without giving two weeks' notice of our intention, without permission of an agent. And if we do, we agree to forfeit to the use of the Company two weeks' pay.

We also agree not to be engaged in any combination [union] whereby the work may be impeded or the Company's interest in any work injured. If we do, we agree to forfeit to the use of the Company the amount of wages that may be due to us at the time.

We also agree that in case we are discharged from the service of the Company for any fault, we will not consider ourselves entitled to be settled with in less than two weeks from the time of such discharge.”

All Lincoln Movies Are Government Propaganda Films

. . . designed to prop up and glorify the welfare/warfare state by associating the current regime, Democrat or Republican, with the sacriligiously deified Dishonest Abe. They are always filled with a blizzard of lies and half-truths, as is most "Lincoln scholarship" in general. The Daily Bell comments on the latest statist propaganda film by Steven Spielberg.

After budget cuts reduce sheriff force, armed posse patrols Oregon county

There's no room in the county jail for burglars and thieves. And the sheriff's department in a vast, rural corner of southwest Oregon has been reduced by budget cuts to three deputies on patrol eight hours a day, five days a week.

But people in this traditionally self-reliant section of timber country aren't about to raise taxes to put more officers on the road. Instead, some folks in Josephine County, larger than the state of Rhode Island, are taking matters into their own hands — mounting flashing lights on their trucks and strapping pistols to their hips to guard communities themselves. Others have put together a virtual neighborhood watch, using Facebook to share tips and information.

"I believe in standing up for myself rather than waiting for the government to do something for me," said Sam Nichols, a retired marina manager.

Nichols has organized a posse of about a dozen fed-up residents who have started patrolling the small community of O'Brien, which has about 750 residents.

"We call ourselves the CAC Patrol, Citizens Against Crime," he said.

Separately, a retired sheriff's deputy in a community about 10 miles away has started a Facebook page called "To Catch a Thief," an open group that has nearly 1,200 members who post reports of crimes that aren't priorities for the county sheriff's office.

"In a rural community like this, we all know each other, and we're all related," said Carol Dickson, who started the group about three months ago and posts regularly.

"People know who's doing this," she said of the property crimes around Cave Junction, a town of nearly 2,000 people about 30 miles from the county seat of Grants Pass.

"They are getting tired of it," Dickson said. "They are speaking up, and they are saying, 'Enough.'"
Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson says he's glad for the help but warns that law enforcement is dangerous work.

Issa threatens subpoena this week over ObamaCare documents

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa has threatened to subpoena the Department of Health and Human Services if it does not turn over documents by Thursday on a program he claims is being used to "buy" the election by hiding the effects of ObamaCare.

Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, made his demands in a letter late Wednesday to Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. His office effectively is accusing the department of stringing them along in their months-old request for documents about an $8 billion program that pays bonuses to Medicare Advantage plans.

"Your staff has run out of excuses and the long delay in providing these documents is inexcusable," Issa wrote, in the letter obtained by FoxNews.com.

Issa claims the bonus program is being used to mask the first round of Medicare Advantage cuts in connection with the health care overhaul -- in order to win favor with seniors. He said in a recent letter that "the only plausible explanation" for the program is that it's being used as a "temporary bandage" to cover up cuts, "realizing the political danger" of those cuts in an election year.

TRAVELLER

Via Tim Manning

Traveller, R.E. Lee's horse is buried just outside of Lee's Chapel in Lexington, Virginia. Hundreds of thousands of Lincoln head pennies have been left face down on the bronze plague marking Traveller's burial site. Southerner's continue to do this EVERYDAY of the year. This is a tradition begun by VMI students for good luck prior to taking a big test or an exam. VMI students firmly believed that good luck would follow them for placing a Lincoln head penny with the face down so that Lincoln would have "to kiss the ass of Lee's horse Traveller." My family always leaves the Lee Chapel by the side door at Traveller's grave so that they can pay their tribute to General Lee's horse in this manner.

Before Lee's death, the aging General Lee dictated a letter to his daughter Agnes for an artist who wished to depict his horse. No words could better express Lee's love for his beloved Traveller:

"If I were an artist like you I would draw a true picture of Traveller — representing his fine proportions, muscular figure, deep chest and short back, strong haunches, flat legs, small head, broad forehead, delicate ears, quick eye, small feet, and black mane and tail. Such a picture would inspire a poet, whose genius could then depict his worth and describe his endurance of toil, hunger, thirst, heat, and cold, and the dangers and sufferings through which he passed. He could dilate upon his sagacity and affection and his invariable response to every wish of his rider. He might even imagine his thoughts, through the long night marches and days of battle through which he has passed.

"But I am no artist; I can only say he is a Confederate grey. I purchased him in *the mountains of Virginia in the autumn of 1861, and he has been my patient follower ever since — to Georgia, the Carolinas, and back to Virginia. He carried me through the Seven Days battle around Richmond, the Second Manassas, at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, the last day at Chancellorsville, to Pennsylvania, at Gettysburg, and back to the Rappahannock. From the commencement of the campaign in 1864 at Orange, till its close around Petersburg, the saddle was scarcely off his back, as he passed through the fire of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and across the James River. He was almost in daily requisition in the winter of 1864-65 on the long line of defenses from Chickahominy, north of Richmond, to Hatcher's Run, south of the Appomattox. In the campaign of 1865, he bore me from Petersburg to the final days at Appomattox Court House. You must know the comfort he is to me in my present retirement….Of all his companions in toil, 'Richmond,' 'Brown Roan,' 'Ajax,' and quiet 'Lucy Long,' he is the only one that retained his vigor. The first two expired under their onerous burden, the last two failed. You can, I am sure, from what I have said, paint his portrait."
