Suspect in police shooting says he feared for life

Via Don

A man accused of fatally shooting a police officer and wounding five others during an Ogden drug raid last month says he feared for his life because he thought people were breaking into his home to rob and kill him.

Matthew Stewart told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/zMxrig ) that he never heard the drug strike force members identify themselves or announce they were at his home to serve a search warrant the night of Jan. 4.

Stewart, in an interview Friday at the Weber County Jail, said he was asleep when he heard his alarm clock and then a noise that sounded like glass breaking. A shootout between the suspect and officers followed a short time later.

“Some parts I remember vividly. Other parts it was like I was running on instinct,’’ he said. “When you’re convinced that you are getting robbed and most likely killed by a group of armed men, your instincts kick in.’’

  1. Sick.
They kicked in this man's door in the middle of the night over ONE POT PLANT.

I'm a deep sleeper, and beating in my door *MIGHT* wake me up. Maybe.

TIPTOE otoh and I'll be awake INSTANTLY, though - but I digress...

I could EASILY see myself in his situation. To me it shouldn't MATTER if he heard them screaming "POLICE!!" since non-state-employed home-invasion robbers do this all the time!

I'm sorry this pig's family has to deal with his death, I'm sorry this poor man's life is RUINED, and I'm honestly sorry he didn't kill them all.

    THIS. SHIT. HAS. TO. STOP!

There is simply no reason they couldn't have waited around the corner and watched his house with remote-video, and nabbed him when he came out to go to work. Serve your warrant then, when there's no chance of confusion or anyone getting killed!

Of course, this robs the pigs of the chance to play soldier, and it robs them of the chance to make a public display of their power to punish anyone who THINKS of violating their diktats.

I swear, I'm praying for a nationwide RASH of these sorts of events. If the first pig through the door only had a 50/50 shot of going home, you'll have a hard time getting one to be first through the door.

Without the first, there can be no second, third or 7th.

    Enough is ENOUGH!

PS (for the slow-kids): Peace OFficers ain't PIGS.
If you don't know the difference, odds are that you're a pig.

Really and more and more of this reaction is bound to occur.

  3. Man should be given a medal, not jail.

    DA should be strung up.

  4. Absolutely and well done. Hopefully the powers to be will back off from these ridiculous, unwarranted raids. Just like at Waco they could have arrested him when he was on his daily run outside instead of murdering women and children.
