I Am Now An Ex-Marine

A Southerner Speaks

"I have always been proud of my time spent as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. I served in the Republic of Vietnam in 1969 and, while I was certainly no "John Wayne" type, I tried to do my duty to the best of my ability and I did bring all of my platoon out of Vietnam alive.

This past summer, the son of a friend of mine was very 'gung ho' about joining the Marines and asked my opinion, which I tried to give as honestly as possible, warts and all. I don't know if my discussions had any influence on him, but he enlisted, completed all of the pre-enlistment tests and physical exams and went to all of the pre-enlistment meetings. To say the least, he was very excited about serving his country in the Corps.

Shortly before he left Nashville for boot camp, he was told he could not serve his country because he had a Confederate Battle Flag tattooed on his shoulder in an area that would be completely covered by a t-shirt, and certainly by his uniform.

When informed of this, I went to the local recruiting station that had processed this young man to see if I were getting the entire story. The recruiter, a staff sergeant, told me, "Yes, sir. The Marine Corps considers the Confederate Flag a 'hate symbol,' but if the young man in question had a state or U.S. flag tattoo, that would be acceptable."

I informed the young sergeant that my family had defended the State of Tennessee (also his home state) against a sadistic invasion under that flag and to call our sacred flag of honour a 'hate symbol was an insult to ALL southerners, but especially to those Southerners who had risked or even given their lives in service to the Marine Corps. Southerners had served at Belleau Woods, at Tarawa and Iwo Jima, at Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir, and at Khe Sanh and Hue City, but now we are no longer wanted in the politically-correct don't-offend-any-minorities military? (This was just prior to the Fort Hood massacre)

He was polite, even sympathetic, but said the flag policy was a Marine Corps policy from Headquarters Marine Corps and not a local decision. After informing the sergeant that it seemed to me that our military was building a mercenary force of illegal aliens while rejecting native-born Americans in order to have a ready force to turn, without question, on American citizens, I asked the sergeant if he had taken out the trash yet.

He replied that he hadn't.

I then said, "Please add these to the day's garbage," and returned my lieutenant's bars, my gold and silver Marine Corps emblem from my dress blues, my shooting badges and my Vietnam ribbons.

I, like many of you, have always been told, "Once a Marine, always a Marine," and "There are no ex-Marines, only former Marines," but for me that is no longer true.

I was born in the South. I was raised here. I raised my family in the South and some day, God-willing, I hope to be buried in the native soil of our Southern homeland. I have always considered myself a Southerner first, and will remain so, despite any other organization that I may temporarily join.

I will never make a critical remark about a veteran, from any branch of the service, but from now on, I will do everything in my power to discourage any Southern young man, or lady, from becoming a future veteran. I am now an ex-Marine."

"I took my grandson a few years ago to an SCV meeting and I introduced him to Mr. Andrews. He was 18 at the time and was thinking about joining the Marine Corps. If my memory serves me correct, Gene told him to think seriously about it first and then if he wanted to join, then join. He also made the comment that he thought our troops need to be at home protecting our borders and citizens rather than fighting wars in some far off foreign country."

  1. Very sad indeed that our military doesn't recognize the Confederate campagin, athiest concerts being held at Fort Bragg and gay marriages being OK'd and performed by the Navy and other branches I guess. My son is in ARMY AIT training at Fort Benning right now. He said that there are a LOT of guys there that shouldn't have even passed the MEPS. He said it cost $80k to train a soldier. It's too much red tape (as usual in all gov't entities) so they let them in and don't do anything about it. They just say they'll be weeded out eventually.....

I am very concerned about the future of our military and especially my son. As far as I'm concerned the day M.O. set foot at Fort Bragg was the last day I'll ever go there again.

  2. Our educational institutions and government have been thoroughly infiltrated by Communists, as you well know, and I believe the ending will not be pleasant. If this had occurred 20 years hence, then our Republic would be doomed, but there are too many of us left who were brought up the rite' way to allow this to happen. Hold on!:)

  3. Brock,

I must say that I am in full agreement with the Lt. My son served in the Corps from 2000-2004 and was in the 2003 Invasion Force into Iraq. Before that I would travel to Camp Le Juene several times a month to visit and/or bring him home on leave. He would tell me about the lack of character and education of the great majority of Marines on base who had gone through Bootcamp. Yes, even the USMC has lowered it's standards! If by chance the military is just in "need" of cannon fodder-they have done a great job of finding it. Once it becomes a "peace time" force they will release the best and keep the least: have seen this back in the 1970's. My son is not even allowed to display a Confederate flag front vanity plate, his Cavalry CSA crossed swords decal on his truck back window because he works for the Federal Government at the National Cemetery. And yet there are several other workers there who are also Southern born who have to wear long sleeved shirts to cover tattoos of the Flag even in the heat of Summer.

Guess we who display the Confederate Battle flag must all be "racist haters"-which is far from the truth as far as I know. I have the Bonnie Blue flag displayed on the front of my van so that every Southerner knows how I feel; as they would know what it is.

  4. Brock,

I wanted to take a moment to validate many of the posts on your article. As you know, I just recently departed the Marine Corps in 2009. I had broken service and served from 1998-2002 and 2005-2009. I witnessed huge transformations within the Marine Corps during these time periods. I took part in Operation Noble Eagle which was the first name of Operation Enduring Freedom. On my second track of broken service I participated in Iraqi Freedom. Through these eight years of service I personally witnessed:

    (1) A drug trafficker caught carrying multiple bags of cocaine onto and off base, kept around for another year or so in my unit. They would not discharge this piece of shit, and any attempts to do so were hindered by higher command.

    (2) A malingering Marine, fat bodied with no regard to authority kept around for 3 years in my unit. He didn't pass a PFT in that time either which all should have been plenty of reason to release him.

    (3) The concept of small unit leadership has disappeared in most of the Corps, replaced by centralized types of command. Any Marine from the past will tell you that it has always been the small unit leadership that made the Corps what it had been.

    (4) Currently, an affirmative action type of program has been implemented and I've personally seen White SSG's passed over with immaculate service records and SSG's of other races with tarnish on their service records promoted over the White SNCO's

    (5) Not to mention the female service members that do indeed screw their way to special favors, or ensure their pregnancy coincides with their scheduled deployment...in other words they get a pass on deploying. Some even wait until they are in theater to get pregnant in which case they get an early pass home.

So to add to the pessimistic outlook of the services, at least from my perspective, the smart ones are getting out and the corrupt are multiplying.
