Congress Theatrics Saved Us Money!

"Yesterday Congress descended into theatrics. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) decided to force the Senate to read the 2,000 page Omnibus appropriations bill. Expecting to be tied up until Saturday with the reading, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) yanked it, thereby saving the taxpayers billions. Instead, the Senate will work with a short continuing resolution.

On the House side, had you told me a year ago that the Democrats would vote to continue what they called the “failed policies of the Bush administration” I’d have never believed you. But sure enough, House Democrats voted to keep the Bush tax cuts in place for two more years.

A lot of conservatives, myself included, wanted to kill the tax compromise on the theory that we’d be in a stronger bargaining position next year. It was not, however, a hill to die on and I suspect no conservatives will try to take vengeance on the Republicans who voted for the deal. After all, it rendered Nancy Pelosi’s final moments as Speaker of the House into rank irony — Pelosi having to defend, support, and push through the House the tax cuts she spent nearly eight years opposing.

It made for a great feast of crow within the Democratic caucus"
